Scanning cross-processed film

When I scan (Epson 4870 photo), the color of the area chosen changes if I include more or less of the area outside the frame or if I change the crop. When I'm scanning "normal" shots, it's easy to tell what I need to change (usually in PS Elements) for the shot to look "right." But when I scan film that's been cross processed, how do I know what to alter to get the best result? I don't really want to just scan it however it goes through and make it look "pretty" - I want it to have some look of having been cross processed. I'm just not that experienced at seeing the x-pro images to know what that is. And if I do much of it with PS, then I'll kinda feel like I could have done that with any shot, defeating the purpose of x-pro in the first place.
Thoughts? Advice?

I suggest that you use Epson scan set to professional turn off the auto adjust features and scan as positive.

I essentially handle everything this way with the most pleasing results. Do not re balance red green or blue histogram adjustment sliders ... if anything keep them fully wide.

don't apply any autobalance in photoshop either or you'll loose the look

I do use the pro mode only. I'll look for all the hidden auto features (pretty sure they're turned off).

I agree with everything up until the last line and I only partially disagree there. In photo shop st the hilight and shadow clip to '0' (zero) and auto adjust if you like, but mostly I'd recommend adjusting colour, contrast and density to taste and to do it in the curves tool.

If the selected area is changing as you adjust the marque than you have auto something on. Scan as a slide (positive), invert in photoshop and you'll get better results
