Scanner Problems

I have an inexpensive epson scanner, I shoot alot of conerts and in areas where there isn't much density it crops the sides. Can someone tell me what scanners don't do this...i've heard it can be a problem in general.

You didn't say which scanner or what scanning software you are using. If you are using Epson Scan I'd recommend using professional mode, turning off auto and making all selections manually, then saving this config so you can use it as your default.
I think Configuration->Thumbnail Cropping Area should be set to Large if you are using the film holders.

I've tried all that...in the manual it states this can be a problem...I've seen others state the same issue. What other scanner can you recommend that doesn't have this problem?

You've tried all what? Turn off "thumbnail" mode and you can select whatever areas you like using the "marquee" tool.

I agree. Avoid automatic modes whenever you can unless you are making a "quick and dirty" scan.

Software that makes adjustments and crops automatically usually makes educated guesses about the material you scan and can often guess wrong. The only way to force the computer to record what you want is to use manual mode.

If you quickly want to scan things to make contact sheets with or to put a low-rez version on your web page, automatic modes are usually okay but they aren't very good for high quality work.

Secondarily, I think you should consider using different software for your scanner. SilverFast and VueScan are two good ones.

At the VERY MINIMUM you should read the websites and do some research for yourself.

You still haven't said what scanner and what software you are using. I never saw this problem using an Epson 2450 or V700 with Epson Scan. You certainly won't have this problem with Vuescan. In any case, it's a software problem, not a scanner defect.
