many scanners will work with linux. I use several scanners with the linux box. Mostly I use an Epson Perfection 4870 . Go to Linux.com to see tutorials and the list of currently supported scanners. It seems that most of the epson scanners are very well supported.

Another option to think about is to use Vuescan which will support a lot of scanners.

A bit late to the thread, but:

Vuescan doesn't need SANE to work. I moved to Vuescan when Microsoft and Canon dropped driver support for my film scanner when XP came out. You can download and use Vuescan in linux under the same license as you purchased for Windows, no additional cost. One Vuescan license is good across all operating systems. The linux version of Vuescan is maintained and updated at the same rate as the Windows version. Linux still has driver support for my Canon film scanner nearly 10 years after Microsoft and Canon dropped Windows drivers for it when XP replaced Win98. That was within about 6 months of my scanner purchase.
