Scanner for 4x5 film

I bought a used Epson 4990 but had to return it because of a problem it had. Is the 4990 still worth buying if I find another one or should I bite the bullet and spend the $400-500 for the V700 or 800?

I used a 4990 for years until it broke during a move. Any that you find will be old and possibly with problems. Look at Epsons refurbished page. Sometimes they have current generation scanners at considerable savings. In my experience, many of these refurbished items never had anything wrong with them. They were just returned to stores after being opened and could not be sold by the store as new.

Bite the bullet. On the large format site, there is an active and detailed scanner comparison in progress. It might be more information than you are looking for. A widely held view is that the Epson V7xx and V8xx are very good large format film scanners.

The old Epson 2450 scanned 4x5 film well enough for my purposes. Perhaps its greatest handicap is a lack of drivers for modern computers. Upgrading to a V700 offered little better results for me. Of course someone wanting that last extra bit of performance should try the newer models.

Yes!! My old Epson Expression 1680 Pro is even older than the 2450 and it is fine for 4x5 and 8x10; even MF, if I don't expect much out of it. I drive it with modern software, too: Silverfast Ai Studio 8.

I'd just bite the bullet... I have both the Canon CanoScan 9000MkII and the Epson V850 Pro. They are both very good. The Epson V scanners will be faster and generally better overall.

I scan in two pieces with my Epson V500 then stitch it back together with Photoshop. Works great.

Or, when I get around to it, I contact print then scan with the V500. Works just as nice.

But I am not looking for drum scan results. I am happy with what I get and the price is right.

I have the Epson 850 which I purchased last year and it does a nice job on 4x5.

It's worth it.

Canon 9950 still cuts the mustard. eBay, around $200.

I bought an Epson with 4x5 capabilities some years ago to scan the 4x5's I had. I don't recall the model number. It did the job, but I hated the software! So glad to be rid of it. Canon has the best factory scan SW.
