Like most of us, I have a collection of photographic odds and ends in my Junque' Boxe (tm).
One of them was a perfectly good old tripod head that I could not use because the threads at the bottom used to mount to the actual tripod were stripped out.
Let it be noted that tripod threads historically came in basically two sizes. 1/4" for consumer stuff, SLRs, and smaller cameras, and 3/8" for larger/heavier cameras like Hasselblads. So much so, Hasselblad (and others) made a reduction fitting that threaded into the bottom camera 3/8" hole and reduced it to 1/4" for use on smaller/older tripods.
It occurred to me that I had one of those thread adapters. So what I did (with the the proper amount of sweat and swearing) was drill out and thread the bottom of the tripod head in question to take the aforementioned 3/8" to 1/4" adapter, which then threaded onto the 1/4" mount of one of my El Cheapo generic consumer tripods, and, volila! I have a fully usable little tripod system.
I primarily use this for doing tests at home like shutter speed testing or focus checks and so on so I didn't want to spend $30 or $40 for yet another generic used tripod head.
