Saved $2500 dollars today!

I shoot a lot of black and white, but I also love color. (Portra 400 is my favorite.)

However, I had really been considering the new Plustek scanner along with a good printer. (Probably 13x19)

Anyway, I must say....after today's darkroom session, I am no longer thinking about it.

I was able to get exactly what I wanted only spending about $80 dollars. (Chemistry and 100 sheets of FCA)

What do you guys think?

I mean the logical way of thinking "If I buy this dress in the sale with $50 off, I can use the money for new shoes/hat/bag".

I've also been eying a Canon 24mm 1.4L.

I know it's a dirty word, but if you run into limitations with your darkroom space, Durst Lambdas do a hell of a job on FCA, or Endura, or Fomatone, or just about anything else under the sun. I ran into an issue last summer where I wanted to make 30x30" prints from my 6x6 color negatives, and seeing as I lack the facilities to do so, I went the Lambda route. I was pleasantly surprised with the results.

I would hazard the statement that these prints would have been nigh impossible to make in a darkroom, without extensive masking, an enlarger made out of cast-iron, bolted to the floor, critically aligned three times over, and located in a darkroom in a rural area with absolutely no environmental vibration to speak of.

That being said, with all that money you saved, why not take a trip?

Thanks for the info. I can print 20x24 in the darkroom here, but I suspect I won't get any bigger than 16x20. Printing color is challenging enough without have to deal with a larger print.

Anyway...why not take a trip?

I'm already in Japan.

Nah, My family and I are already going back to the U.S. this winter.

But anyway...There's no need to make a point here...cause everyone get's it.

I just hear how expensive analog is....so I thought I'd share.

I was going to make a comment about that being insulting to women, but then I thought, oh, he's British, that's just the way they are.

I'm proud, like him, of my freedom of expression and I don't think you should be proud of your moralistic/zealot attitude toward those talking with you. Your opinion about somebody else's expressions is irrelevant and off-topic, doesn't help the conversation, doesn't help anybody, and doesn't help cretin woman either! Use your "style" of expression without thinking it is polite to reprimend somebody else for using expressions that don't match with your paranoias. You'll be reprimanded for your reprimand!

Most of all, learn to smile! The world is full of "sex jokes" since it was created! Any woman conversation will confirm you that.

Free expression is fine except when it belittles anyone who has less social 'power' - then it is less about humurous critique than reinforcement of an already-existing unfairness! Jokes are for making life fun, but life's too short to not be respectful of everybody! Beyond anything, it really makes the world nicer.

...back to the OP's question, I went through much the same process before I built my "last" darkroom, questioning the onslaught of new technologies of printing. At the time I may have, erroneously as it turns out, thought that it would all be so much easier. I finally concluded, not based on economics, that I had to stick with my strong suit, producing unique, archival-ly stable, hand made prints by classical means. The fact that my costs haven't changed since I built it, and are pretty much based only on consumables, may occasionally result in a slight internal smirk of satisfaction, but the real bonus comes from knowing, as you have said, that I can produce a fine print directly, and literally, by my own hand, with little or no technological intervention.

I can't tell you how pleased this makes me. I hope to be making my first prints this weekend so it is good to hear others are having good success.
