Satinsnow glass comments (again!)

I appreciate that this has been mentioned before and that almost everyone is aware of Satinsnow ground glass ... BUT ... I just received my order (to the UK) - and I am very pleasantly surprised by the product! Even the packaging is impressive/professional and smacks of a quality product! A superb fit too with no rough edges! The improvement itself is difficult to describe but the image on it is much "smoother" and a big improvement on the original! I can heartily recommend dealing with Dave wherever you are located on the planet! Superb service and my only regret is that I didn't order 2!! BTW Dave, double your price!! Still be worth every penny/cent!

I recently received SatinSnow screens for two cameras, and see a marked improvement in edge to edge focussing. The one for 4X5 Shen-Hao fit perfectly. The 8X10 Grover was too tight in corners but that may have been due to my restoring it with several layers of varnish. Scraped the corners, and a bit tight but fine.
Highly recommend the product; but, as said above, suggest they raise their price to reflect its true value.

I've got a better idea, I propose that all other photographic suppliers bring their prices down, in line with Satin Snow. Yeah, that's the ticket

Seriously, The SSGG is a great product at a great price.

I agree that the Satin Snow GG is a great product at a great price, but don't monkey with success. As an example look at what happened to E-Bay when the company raised their prices. The stock price went into the toilet. NO NO raising the price would be a bad idea. Did I convince anybody? My wife's pet name for me is CHEAP!

Well everybody,

Don't worry, Satin Snow prices are pretty well set, I even had someone tell me today, I was too expensive....go figure! LOL

We founded our company on the ideal that photography does not have to be an elite pastime or job, so for the forseeable future, we will continue to maintain the price structure we currently have!

Thanks for all the support! you guys and gals are what photography is all about, Keep shooting and enjoying photography!

I whole heartedly agree with Neal's idea!!
Oh, and those SatinSnow gg's are a wonder to work with. Thanks Dave.

I've ordered new GG's for two old folders and the Gandolfi project. I'm looking forward to seeing the improvement!

Indeed, it is a very good product. I got one each for my Linhofs and ordered two more as spares. Delivery time was about six weeks - quite acceptable, IMHO.

Well, my first 8x10 outing was with standard GG and I had a lot of trouble seeing well. My 2nd outing today was with a new Satinsnow GG and I was totally blown away! Here I am on the beach focusing sand tack sharp, it wasn't grain of the GG like before, it was sand! This GG is on another level compared to my stock GG. Dave If you ever plan on retiring please give me notice so I can stock up on a lifetime supply

What's worse is the other day I had a note in the mailbox saying I had to collect something 'registered mail' from the post office so I excitedly zipped down only to find it was a licence plate for our bike rack! Excitement letdown!

Nige , I hope you used the transparent ones

I have had my GGs for a few months but had never used them until last night. I have 2 backs and swapped from one to the other to check the difference. I reckon I get an extra 1.5 stops brighter image, plus the grain is much smaller.

Needs fresnel for wide angles

I recently installed a Satin Snow on my Tachihara. With my 150mm and 210mm the image is definitely brighter and easier to focus. Images do seem to "pop" into focus quite easily.

However with my 90mm the image is very dark outside the central area and indoors it is very difficult to see the edges to compose. I purchased a fresnel lens for about $8 at OfficeMax. While it isn't designed for cameras it has made a big difference.

I won't go back to my old ground glass!

We are currently working on getting some custom thin fresnels made for us, as I found the fresnels that were offered by the book stores and office stores were to thick for the photographic applications, one question I would have, is where did you mount your fresnel? and have you noticed any focus shift after the installation of the fresnel?

90mm and shorter lenses are difficult due to the nature of the lens, and a great many of them out there are slow lenses.

But I would be interested in your experiance with the focus shift and how you mounted it?

We are working as quick as we can, to get everything we have on the order boards, so it should not be a whole lot longer, one thing I do need to note, is we have been having difficulties with the US customs services for our international orders, due to some stupid laws and have had to go through some extra inspections, so this has slowed to process down a bit, it is one of those catch 22 situations, that we all dream about, you want to come up with a product that is popular, and when you do, the stupid government decides they need to take a closer look! go figure, live the dream only to have to put up with the crap! LOL But we are working with the authorities to make sure that we can get back to getting product out in a more timely manner.

Dave,

I simply cut the fresnel to size and mounted it behind the GG-hmmm... what's behind? OK, it goes like this- lens, bellows, Satin Snow, fresnel, me. I put the ridges on the fresnel against the GG. My old GG was actually plastic with a fresnel cut into it. Behind that was mounted a clear piece of glass with the grid on it. I removed that glass, marked the grid on my fresnel and put the fresnel in its place.

Since the image is formed on the GG with nothing in the way I haven't seen any focus shift. However, I haven't yet done any macro or wide open work where DOF wouldn't cover any focus shift.

Maybe tomorrow I'll through in a Polaroid and do a 1:1 shot with my 150mm. That should turn up any shift.

My 90mm is a 6.8 which isn't as slow as some. However speed is probably less important for the dimmer image than the angle at which the light strikes the GG from the lens. The more perpindicular the light rays are to the GG the brighter the image. I can compensate a bit by tilting my focusing loupe to match the angle of the light.

Thanks for a nice product at a nice price! I'll be interested in the fresnel when you get something you like!

On the strength of every bodys comments here I have made an order for a couple of relacement ground glass myself. Currently using something very dodgy on the 10 x 8. I look forward to being able to see properly when focusing again!

I had ordered two satin snow glasses for my Sinar 8x10 P and Linhof 8x10 camera. Now I received it. Both glasses are of the same dimension. One is too small to Sinar P and one is too big to Linhof. I think I will ask local glass store to cut one to fit my Linhof. But for the other one, no way to put onto Sinar P.

Hi m3500,

Have you emailed me to let me know there is a problem?, I think that most of the people here and around the internet, will attest that I have a 100% fit policy on my screens and if there is a problem, I will make it right, I have not had any emails as of late from anyone with a fit problem on screens that I have made and sent, please let me know where the problem lies and we can get it worked out, so that all is okay, as your first post here is a complaint, it may be better to email or contact the manufacture of the product, before you try to say something...I am always here, very easy to work with and have no problems making sure you have screens that fit your need.

I will be up in your neck of the woods for Kerik's workshop next week....would like to check out the glass if possible and look into changing out some cameras. 8 x 10, 7 x 17, 5 x 7, and possible 14 x 17...the old eyes arent what they used to be!
