Satin Snow Ground Glass

My Satin Snow Ground Glass arrived the other day and I finally had a chance to try it out today on my 4x5.

All I can say is WOW.

This makes all the difference in the world. I'm going to order a couple more the keep on hand "just in case".

Still waiting for mine. He did say he is backed up! I hope it comes soon, the stock GG on the Shen is driving me crazy, the grid has come off in little bits.

Dave, I received my SSGG, perfectly packed and in pristine condition. In just one session it has become my primary GG (Wisner's and Dagor77's are now stored away). And just like the BlackJacket by Quietworks, I consider the SSGG one of the greatest bargains in LF today.

Why are the manufacturers using such inferior glass? Costs? You'd think they'd have improved their groundglass over the last few dozen years.

It is not the glass that creates the problem with stock glass, it is the method used to create the frosted or ground side of the glass, it does take a bit of time to properly grind the glass and to make sure it is evenly ground.

I went to the Satin Snow site and I see the choices for clipped vs. non clipped corners. Why are the corners clipped in the first place? Is there a special reason? When someone tells me to look through the corners, I can't because they aren't there. My 8x10 Ansco has clipped corners on the ground glass, but my 4x5 Toyo does not.

Hi colrehogan

There are a couple of different thought process's on the clipped corners, in days past, in order to check for vignetting, you would look through the clipped portion of the glass and if you could completely see your aperture, then you were not vignetting due to bellows sag or aperture cut off in the corners.

Also others like there corners clipped due to the air tightness of the bellows, it allows air to escape when compressing the camera for short lens shots or folding up a Field camera.

What a difference. I can see now. I also made it a tad clearer my getting my oily fingers all over the gg side while drawing my lines. Any cleaning tips or no-no's?

Hi Eric,

I use Windex Clear Wipes when we clean them before shipping, I also wear latex gloves while handleing the glass to ensure that I don't get finger oil on them, if you use the windex clean wipes, you may have to retrace you lines on them.

Another thing that you can clean them with is scotch bright pads and liquid dish soap.

My glass just arrived today. I mounted the GG in the 8x10 and looked through it. I could see the image without a darkcloth well enough to focus, not bad. I still need to get the other two in place. Thanks!

Does the SS GG come with lines already on it? I shoot 6x7 in my view camera and like the grid used in the Satin Snow Logo.

complete night and day from the previous ground glass.
so much brighter and even.
even in the dark of a church it was noticeably bright.
best $30 Ive spent on photography equipment to date. Ill be sure to link you a picture when I develope and contact print the negatives.

No problem, Dave. I was just a little confused. I saw that you provide some downloadable grids on your site.

I actually used to be an analog graphic artist before digital so I have Rapidograph pens, leadholders and ruling tapes as well of all kinds of straight-edges just waiting to be dusted off.

Dave, have you thought about how much it would cost to custom mark the ground glass. I have started to shoot 6x7 & 6x9 on my linhof and having a properly marked ground glass as opposed to my dodgy cardboard masks would be a great help.

Yes we have thought about it, extensivly, and I cannot justify raising my cost by 400% to do it, we offer alternatives on our website, which are free to anybody to download, I just at this time, don't want to raise my prices that much.

You are more than welcome to look at what we offer and if it helps in anyway, then good shooting.

For additional grids on my glass, (with aerial film I cannot always be in the center so the center grid is not always useable), I have baught the craft grid mylar for quilters and cut half a frame looking like and L with a long leg. The grid has varying lines and dashes for inch, half, quarter, and eighths. I can still focus inside the L where the media will be. I apply this firmly with a light edge spray of craft glue which acts like post-it note glue IF you let it "dry" for 15 minutes first. Cleans up from the glass easy. Just don't spray the L edge to edge or it is hard to remove.
