I'm heading to San Francisco soon for a weekend getaway with my partner. We'll be staying in Nob Hill, and probably just walking to all the tourist/ shopping places.

Is there a good place that sells film, espcially PKR? I've heard of Gassers, but was also warned that they are expensive.

Shopping was on the list too, and he wants to go to the Nordstrom rack, 555 9 st. I was thinking of taking the streetcar along Market to 9th, and then walking down 9th street. Is that a safe district for a couple of white guys? I've heard about the Tenderloin and not to go there, but I thought that was north of Market and we'd be going south.

Any tips appreciated!

If I remember that location, it's fine. It looks scruffier than it is, but the area has been cleaning up every time I've been there. Just because of the distance, though, I'd say take a cab or the bus (There should be a bus line running straight to that shopping center from Market, either on 9th itself or one block over either side). Check out www.sfmuni.com for maps of their transit system. Looking here: http://transit.511.org/providers/maps/SF_712200711012.pdf

It looks like you can take the MUNI subway or streetcar to Civic Center, then switch to the #19 bus to go down 8th to Bryant, and when you're done, walk back the one block to 8th again and catch the same #19 bus back to Market Street (it turns around just a block or two past Bryant and comes back up 7th).

Even the Tenderloin isn't nearly so bad as it used to be. You're fine in the daytime even alone, and at night, it's ok if you're there together, so long as you stick to crowds and main streets. There's now half-million dollar condos in the Tenderloin.

While you're there, go out to the Castro and take a meal at Nirvana, this Tibetan/Nepalese restaurant on Castro street. Go early, because they get busy at dinnertime. If you're up for Tapas, there's a couple of famous places in the Mission district that are quite good - Ramblas is at 557 Valencia, and there's another really good one around the corner on 16th whose name escapes me at the moment. Take some time to wander the Mission district, up and down Valencia and some of the cross streets there - all kinds of neat funky boutiques and bookstores, the kinds of places San Francisco is famous for, but are disappearing from the better known neighborhoods because of rising rents.

Over in the Haight, there's Cha Cha Cha, a cuban restaurant, right near the panhandle of Golden Gate Park. Down in the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street is the famous Slanted Door vietnamese restaurant. For Russian, try Katia's on 5th, at Balboa (Richmond District). A neat Italian place that's away from the tourist trap of North Beach is Vivande Porta Via (Dead Link Removed, a longish walk back to Nob Hill, but the Fillmore is also very charming. Vivande has a dish on their menu I've heard about but never had the opportunity to try other places, because it's very time-consuming to make so many restaurants don't offer it. It's called Scrignere de Venere (literally, Venus' Treasure Box). Give it a try if you get over that way.

There are bunches of places to buy film here in San Francisco. As well as the places mentioned above, we also have Just Film. He carries it all, and always has at least one brick of PKR (I just bought some from him the other day!) Just Film is actually located inside of Newlab where I work, 651 Bryant Street between 4th & 5th. We are a couple of blocks away from Photographers Supply, which is a good place to go as well.

As for areas to avoid, the Tenderloin gets a bad rap...it's really not as bad as it seems. The main thing is that there isn't all that much worth going to in the Tenderloin other than my favorite restaurant, Original Joe's. Or maybe if you want to score some crack...ha ha. As for shopping, depending on your interests I can probably point you towards some "must see" places. If you are interested in music make sure to check out Amoeba Music on Haight Street. Best record store in the world.

We'll probably be staying in the Union Square area for shopping, and just to gawk at places like Needless Markups (Nieman Marcus), aside from the expidition to the Rack, and for film. Most film I can get at home easily, but not Kodachrome anymore.

lately I've been buying all my music online from these guys: http://www.juno.co.uk/

Thanks for all the tips so far, I'll have to start putting together a plan of what to see when.

Has Tad's steakhouse reopened? I ate there in 2002 and even though it was horribly tacky, the food was decent, and great value.

Is October 8 a holiday in the US, and of so, would these places be open then?

My calendar says Oct 8th is Columbus day. It's a federal holiday so banks and post offices will be closed. Most retail stores will be open for business as usual however.

October 8 is Columbus Day. But it's not a serious holiday outside of government. Most things will be open, as noted. Just be sure you have your major reservations (hotel, car, flights) booked in advance.

I THINK Tad's is open. Another favorite around Union Square is Il Fornaio (the location makes it a tourist trap, but the food is worth it in general). If you want to eat there, book early as they get BUSY, even in the off-season.

We will be open, and I just checked with Volker @ Just Film...he has Kodachrome Pro in stock, nice and cold! As for making the trek to Haight Street and Amoeba Music...it truly is worth it!!

I'll have to stop by then. That's Thankgiving weekend in Canada, thus the reason for the trip - it's a long weekend!

While I would exercise caution in any city the Tenderloin really is not that bad, specially during the day. The 9thh St. corridor is totally fine. For shopping don't miss the new Westfield Center at 5th and Mission. If you are nearby there's a great building on the corner of 6th & Howard, covered on the outside with furniture that's stuck on somehow. Quite cool.
The Slanted door is indeed very good, but you might try Tu Lan at 8 6th St. It's a funky little hole in the wall where $10 will get you some of the best Vietnamese food around.
Also well worth a visit are the galleries at 49 Geary, near Market St. I particularly enjoy the many drawers full of Michael Kenna's at the Wirtz Gallery, but that whole building is full of great stuff.

Thanks for all the tips, we had a great time in San Francisco. I did get over to Just Film, a great little place it is. My feet hurt from climbing all the hills! That's what I get for staying in ahotel at the top of the hill I guess.

Now I have to develop my film, I travelled light and only carried a Fuji rangefinder.

Sorry I missed this thread before you left... DId you notice all the small lighted signs at the train stops telling you when the next muni train would arrive?
I put them in about 8 years ago. There was/is nowhere in SF that worries me in the daytime. Not even Haight/Ashbury. Be smart, be careful, don't worry.

For others who might reference this thread...
Some good restaurants:

The Stinkin Rose (Columbus and Broadway) Edge of Chinatown and North Beach. best Chiopino I have had yet. I keep trying but no one has come close.

SuppenKutchen (Laguna and Hayes) Closest thing to to a real German Gasthaus I have found in this country.

Fourth Street Deli. (Fourth Street about two blocks east of Market). Amazingly good Rueben for the west coast, great selection of beer. Good place for lunch.

tim in san jose

No, because I didn't take any Muni trains. Just the F line streetcars, cable cars and the #1 bus from the Legion of Honour. The cable cars stopped right outside my hotel, so it was easy to catch them when they were not full.

Another good restaurant that we found is Rue Lepic, 900 Pine street (at Mason). It is authentic French food, and very good and reasonably priced.
