safely removing film from srt

hi everyone

yes i tried to google this but couldn't get a clear answer. i removed the film from my camera today but it maybe hadn't rewound totally. it clicked and so I opened the back but about a frame (the end of the film) is sticking out of the canister when i removed it. surely this doesn't mean the whole film is ruined, does it?

nope your film should be fine. You must have had that leader sticking out to load the film in the first place so you won't have lost anything.

If it's a manual camera where you rewind by turning a crank, you'll hear a sound as the film lets go of the take-up spool. If you stop winding then, the film leader will stick out of the cartridge much as it did when you loaded the camera.

Only time to worry is if more is sticking out than when you loaded it. I like leaving a bit of leader out so I don't have to pop open the canister or use the leader retriever to develop the film.

When you consider how much has to be pulled out that the start to attach to the receiving spool and then how much more is wasted when you turn the winder to number one frame. a lot of the film would have to be out of the cassette to have any frames spoiled

It is probably ok since even more of the end is exposed to light when you loaded the roll.

Just remember that it was shot (label it) so you don't put it in a camera and use it again thinking it's new. That's why I've always let the leader go all the way back in rather than leaving a bit sticking out. Sticking out might be easier when you're going to put it on a reel in the dark, but I KNOW I'd be more likely to shoot a roll of double exposures that way.

If you do leave the leader out, tear a piece in a way that identifies it as exposed.
