I'm about to begin making enlarged negs with APHS and need advice about safelights. I know that red is the recommended color, but will the film be okay with amber as well? Thanks.
I thoroughly trussed up my Thomas Duplex safelight with lots of black tissue paper draped over the safelight...the darkroom was really dark and I kept my body between the APHS and the safelight. I think amber would work if it was dim enough, but do a quick test just to be sure.
The only safe answer is: Make a Test.
Color is one thing but there is also lamp wattage and distance between lamp and film, how long film will be exposed to lamp etc.
I'm using a Kodak red 1A filter in a "beehive" safelight eqiupped with a 15 watt bulb at least 4 feet from the material. It is safe. I have not tried using OC, or any other safelight.
I've used a dim amber safelight successfully in the tests I've done so far. I saw no noticeable base fog, but I didn't do any testing so there may have been something I didn't notice.
