Was looking for a home-brew rapid fixer awhile ago when I stumbled on Ryuji's formula. I have a couple of questions:

1. Is it necessary to heat (a bit) the ammonium thiosulfate to completely dissolve the sulfite and metabisulfite chemicals?

2. The formula states to mix 1:4 for a working solution, but doesn't say if this concentration is for film or paper? It sounds like a film dilution. Is it 1:4 for film and something like 1:9 for paper?

Thank you for any help provided.

Kind regards,
Alan

(there was a url link here which no longer exists) is a link to Ryuji Suzuki's Neutral Rapid Fixer. I am not aware of any requirement for heating, but the formula in its original version is working solution strength, not concentrate. If you are into home brew mixing of rapid fixers from raw components, you may also want to take a look at Rowland Mowrey's Superfix 1 formula.

I think with either formula you should start with 500ml water and then make a final dilution to 1 liter. I suspect that both are film strength working solutions. TF-3 is similar and used 800ml of 60% ammonium thiosulfate (four times as much) to make a liter of stock solution.

Could you share Ryuji's formula, please? I've never been able to find it... Thanks!

Hello Andrew,

Can't remember where I found this, but here is what I have in my notes:

800ml of 60% ammonium thiosulfate
60g sodium sulfite
20g sodium metabisulfite
water to make 1L

Dilute 1:4 for working solution

Based on a comment above this sounds similar to TF-3; though I haven't looked up the exact formula for TF-3.

This is what I have in my notes, if you just want to mix up a liter:

Ammonium Thiosulfate (58-60%) 200ml
Sodium Sulfite (anhy) 15g
Sodium Metabisulfite 5g

Dist. water to make 1000ml
