Ruby lith film

Not sure if this is the place for this question.If the moderator needs to move it go ahead.One of the labs I used to workin many moons ago used to be able to put multiple images on one sheet of paper using what were called drop out masks using ruby lith film to make line negs and positives to accomplish this.My question is where can I find this material either in Canada or the U.S. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know I could use photoshop to accomplish the same result but I'm just trying to kep the old methods alive for my own use and anybody else who would want to try this.

The last time I saw Rubylith in sheets was 10 or so years a go. Ulano still make this product but it looks like it come in rolls. I looked back at one of my old haunts in SoCal called McLogans and they carry it. It is about $60.00 a roll so it should be a life time supply. I hope this helps.

If I recall correctly, I have bought Rubylith at both Woolfitt's (Queen near Dufferin) and at Loomis Art Supplies (the location on Eglinton near Yonge, now called De Serres I think).

You can purchase 30x40-inch single sheets of Ulano Rubylith film online from Dead Link Removed for US$8.68 per sheet. Also available in 40x150-inch (US$42.47) and 40x300 inch (US$71.57) rolls.

Description from the above link:

"Rubylith® RM3 is a high tack ruby film coated onto 300-gauge polyester. Rubylith has an emulsion thickness range of 1.1 - 1.2 mils."​

There may be other places as well that still sell cut sheets, but not too many. MisterArt is located in Houston, Texas, USA.

The stuff is still used regularly for screen printing hand work. I use it often, cut from a big roll, like acetate. Try a screen printing supplier. The guy above mentioned the place to go in L.A. http://www.mclogan.com/shop/index.php

On a tangent note, does anyone know if ruby lith tape (red sticky tape) is available somwhere? It would be handy for masking off negatives.

EDIT: found something called 3M 616 Lithographers Tape at www.uline.com.

I also use the tape all the time. It should be available anywhere the rolls are available (the aforementioned screen printing supply houses).

The biggest problem is finding someone who will supply small quantities at a reasonable price. More often than not, you have to buy a whole case or get gouged by minimum order charges and postage costs. Had the same issue myself last year....

It is worth asking around local small printing firms. You may find one that hasn't gone digital yet or still uses litho offset presses. Screen printers are another possible source.

I have a roll of about 30" wide, or maybe 36", by about 3" in diameter. We used to use it in my engineeering design office about a decade or more ago in preparing originals of what became grey scale mylar base plans, to show existing features for inking the new design on top of.

Well, we have not done that in over 20 years, so I took the roll of rubylith home.

Alternately I will be at the spring "big one" PHSC camera show on 15 May, selling off a heap of photo gear that I have acquired that is now surplus to my needs.

I can cut and package a few sheets to whatever size you feel you need to scratch your itch with Rubylith. I can take it with me to the show, if you are going to be there.
