Not an unusual repair. I always figure on a CLA and possibly a new screen when bidding on a Rollei, and these can easily add $500 to the cost ...

True but camera was sold as in good user shape. So that is where it hurts. Would not have paid anything near the price I did if I thought it would need $400+ to get it repaired. Will be having a long and hopefully not heated discussion with the seller this coming monday in the hopes that they might refund some of the purchase price.

You bought it in a thrift shop and expect them to understand "good user condition"? Might be expecting too much.

Think of it this way: after a complete overhaul you'll have a very reliable and competent camera to work with, probably for the nnext decade before it will need additional service.

It was looked over by their official, professional, in house camera guy. He is the one that grades and tests all camera equipment before sale. He said that it was in perfect working condition. This is not your ordinary low end thrift store. It sells only high end vintage things.

I'd get a written quote for the estimated work needed and go back to them and either ask for a full refund or for them to pay for the work, or maybe 50% of the work's cost. You paid way too much for a Rolleiflex of this type needing that much work.

I bought a Rolleiflex which was described similar. It works for a while, until the winding mechanism broke. It needed a CLA.

You should always add the price for a CLA when buying such an old camera. But once CLA'd the Rolleiflex will serve you for the rest of your life. It is a beautiful camera.
