I am not sure $400 is steep or not as someone commented in this thread that I got the camera dirt cheap.

Anyways I am looking on eBay for the last few weeks and there is nothing available around $400 with Planar lens and cosmetically excellent condition. I don't mind spending another $250 to get is fixed but want to try if I can fix this minor issue by oiling the shutter dial gears under front plate. I will appreciate if someone can help or guide me in the right direction of removing front plate.

Regards, Pendu

If you try to fix the camera yourself, and are not successful, there is a good chance that any repair technician will end up charging you more for their efforts than if you gave it to them in the first place.

Horst had a partially dis-assembled Rollieflex on his bench the last time I visited him - he showed me a few things about it that made it obvious to him that someone had been working on it previously who wasn't sufficiently knowledgeable or experienced to do the work.

Folks who are willing to pay a premium for a Planar like to think it's superior to the Xenotar, but I think that's a myth. Anyway, sounds like you are determined to have the DIY experience; I wish you and the Rollei good luck

I think Planar and Xenotar are of almost equal quality. I didn't say that one is better than other, I just want to say that there is not much available on eBay if you are looking to buy a Rolleiflex is good cosmetic condition with nice glass under $400. I am good at fixing things but I recently fixed my Yashica Mat shutter but again if I don't have any guide for Rollei available, I won't try it.

Thanks

If it has this one problem that you know of, it is very likely -- I'd say 99 percent certain -- that there are other problems you do not know about. Problems are due to age, and age affects everything on those things. Mostly likely the oil inside that dial has hardened over the last 50 years, it needs to be cleaned and lubed.

But there's oil all around that camera, every bit as old. Just because something seems to be working today doesn't mean it is working right, nor that it will be working in 6 months.

If it is a 3.5 planar, does it have a removable hood? If so it is an F model. If not, probably an E. Either way, worth minimum of $700. Dunno what you paid, that doesn't matter.

It is imminently worth repair, and should be if you intend to use it for anything other than collecting dust. A full service by Harry Fleenor will run you probably $300 or so, maybe more, hard to say. But you will then have a Rolleiflex that works like new and could not be replaced by a new camera for anything less than $4,000. Or more.

Get it serviced. Don't dink around with it. Putting oil into the gears around the shutter dial is asking for trouble, not to mention a much higher bill from Harry when he has to clean up your work.

Since most of you are vouching to get a professional CLA done on the camera, I am convinced enough and take your advice seriously. I won't fool around with the camera by myself and get it serviced professionally.

Even though, I am 90% confident that I will be able to fix the issue but you guys are right that there may be other issues or potential issues that can be fixed by a professional.

Thanks for your help and sincere advise.

FWIW, the work Horst has done for me on my Mamiya lenses and Kodak Retina IIIc has resulted in equipment that is a pleasure to use.

Say hello to his dog, Mya for me .

I will say your hi to him. Yes he has a big dog and a nice house in UBC neighbourhood. He seems to be very nice and genuine person and amazing craftsman. I was amazed to see german warship models he has made. I will set up a time with him to get the camera fixed.

The difference between E and F is the meter.

From what I've read some E's came with meters too. And it was an "option" on some E versions as well so some were also installed later as well.

My 2.8E came without a meter; I had one installed in 1965 by Honeywell, then the US Rollei importer. It still works, although I prefer a hand-held meter.

Roger at Camtec in Hamilton, Ontario quoted me $175Cdn for a typical Rolleiflex TLR CLA.
