Rolleiflex question.

I have a Rolleiflex 3.5F that when I put film in it and advanced to frame 1 and took the picture the film advance was locked and could not advance the film or cock shutter. What I did to free it was engage the double exposure and cover the lens and take another picture and then it advanced fine. Anybody know why?

Its that oil you put on the pivots.
Take the wind side cover off. About center of the focus rail is a arm that goes to the front of the camera and connects to a lever that runs up to the frame counter. Flip the double exposure lever and watch it move. Cock and trip the shutter. In the cocked position it should lock the advance, when the shutter is tripped it should release the advance. Simple.

Are you referring to my other post about the 2.8E? If so this is a different camera that I just bought that's in mint condition. Why would this do it on the first frame and not others?

Not sure is this is relevant for yours but when I first got mine (Automat K4) I had this happen on the first frame the first couple films. Turns out that I wasn't turning the advance counter clockwise enough to cock the shutter but only enough to put the winder knob away in the little hole. Drove me mad until I asked someone. I didn't know the shutter had to be cocked this way on the first frame. I see you were able to cock the shutter so never mind I misread your post.

Same camera, different lens.

Why would this do it on the first frame and not others?

Turn the wind lever past the retainer hole then backward to stow away, otherwise its the wind gear not turning far enough.

P.S.
The lockout arm under the camera side should float on its pivot as should the lever going up to the counter wheel.
