Rolleiflex and Rolleicord back compatibility?

Hi,
I'd like to ask for some information regarding the compatibility between the backs used for different rolleiflex and rolleicord models. I currently have a Rolleicord III with a dented back that I am looking to possibly replace and I have also been looking for a sheet/plate adapter.

How do you decide whether a back from one version is compatible with another?
Are all "post-war" rolleifix/rolleicord backs with a removable back compatible or are there anything you need to consider when picking one up? I see that some of the post-war backs have some black coverings on the bottom tab while some are all metal, would that make a difference or is it just a different look? And would the same be true for the pre-war ones?

For the sheet film backs I see that some of them are referred to as "pre-war" backs and have a single latch moving vertically and a red window while some models have the double latch system where you turn one lever horizontally to lock things down. There also seems to be one version compatible with the rolleifix and one that is not (of the post-war version). Are there some versions of the flex/cord that would not work with these adapters?

Unless someone here has this information, I know of no way to find out for sure, as the cameras were made over a wide range of years and in many different models. If it were me, I'd just straighten the back that you have. You just want to make sure the pressure plate is properly aligned.

The dent may just be cosmetic. I've owned several TLRs over the years w/ dented backs, but none were dented enough to affect the film plate alignment.

'Cord backs will not work on 'Flexes. They do not have the part that presses on the Automat system trigger when you close the back.

A quick test says that a 'Flex back will fit a Rolleicord. Although the latches on the backs are different, I bet that they are in the same location, with the mechanism being different ways to accomplish the same thing. The Automat tab will clear the film roll.

Later 'Flex backs have tabs and such to lock the film spools, press other sensors, etc. Beyond my knowledge to lay out the variations.

Early stuff, plate film backs, etc., no idea.

momus has it right- dented backs may still work fine. If it doesn't leak light. The film pressure plate is indexed to the body itself, not to the back, so if the back closes, the pressure plate will be fine.

Thanks to both of you! I've run a couple of rolls through it and it seems fine so I'll probably just let it be the way it is for now and just replace it if I happen to run in to a cheap back. I'll see if I can source a plate back as well to see how well it fits.

Concoct a good story about how that dent happened... might increase the value more than a perfect back would, at least as a conversation starter.
