Rolleicord IIb: Missing screw.

Received a Rolleicord IIb today, beautiful and simple and it works all fine even the slow speed.

Some leatherette has pealed a bit and found a missing screw as in the attachment.

Can I find the replacement screw?

What glue can be used to stick it back?

A camera repair person should have spare screw.

When screwed back and tight transparent nail laquer dab will retain it, don't apply to threads of screw.

Mum, Sis or girl friend normally have nail varnish.

Common hardware. Measure the hole at the center of the opening, it will be the screw diameter in millimeters. The screw type is Flat Head. It will be a 2mm .4 or 3mm .5. The screw should be 5mm or shorter. There is a 3.5mm .6 screw size listed in metric screw charts but usage will be very rare. The Rolleiflex / Rolleicord part number is 02005.85.0 .
Go visit your local hardware store or hobby shop.

Contact cement will reattach the leather covering. Latex contact cement will be best but is rarely available in small quantities. Any glue that dries flexible should be fine.

It isn't a flathead screw. It's a cheesehead screw. Flat on both the top and bottom surface of the head.

I don't know what the threading is, but it is much coarser than typical threading for the screws you will find of this size. I would contact a repair shop and ask to buy one. It is a common screw on Rolleis- 10 or more on every camera to hold both side panels. If you were in the US I'd mail you one, but it would be silly to send such a thing internationally.

The picture in post 1 appears to be tapered to me which will use a flat head screw. If the sides of the screw opening are straight with a flat bottom then a cheese head or pan head screw will work.
Most Rolleicord and Rolleiflex cameras covered in the Rolleiflex Service Manual available at http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/repairmanuals.html show it as being a Pan head screw part number 02005.00.0 and a one shows it as a flat head screw and one shows it as a cheese head screw..

Now, being the camera in question needing the screw is older than the ones covered in this manual the fasteners used in it will not be as advanced in design as the ones used in cameras in the manual but the basic design of the camera will be very similar.

All screws are listed by size, thread pitch, length from the base of the head to the tip of the screw. SAE screws are threads per inch; Metric screws are millimeters per thread.
A M2 .4 5mm with the correct head type to fit flush will most likely work.

With such small part, you may consider not to use it the classic way of wetting both parts and letting them dry dowm, but just wet one surface delicately with a toothpick and hold down immediately.

This also likely overcomes steps between old and new cemented areas.

Here's hoping that Germany still has good hardware stores. I'm not certain where to start in the US to source such a small screw other than another Rolleicord.

Around here a hobby shop is much better source of tiny metric screws than the hardware stores.

Even here, I have to find a source. May be I will ask Paepke Fototechnik and see how things will go...

Already two rolls of HP5+ since yesterday evening...ground glass is dull but sharp. €60 for working shutter with moderate scratches on taking lens..

For screws that are too long put a nut on the screw past where you need to cut, cut the screw with a hacksaw or cutoff wheel in a Dremel, then remove the nut. The cutting will deform the threads at the cut end and removing the nut will correct them.

Got a reply from Paepke Fototechnik that Rollei cameras built before 1960 have special thread for the screws and unfortunately they do not have them in stock. :-(

The screw is in the mail. And use a tiny amount of contact cement (Kontaktkleber in german) for the leatherette.

I see a shoulder under the head which is non standard and may be enough to give it a "special" listing. When you get the screw measure it from the thread edge of the shoulder to the tip then divide that by 5 which is the number of thread peaks, and that will give you the thread pitch. It looks to be a .6 or .7 threads per millimeter.

Assuming its a 2mm screw and scaling the posted image, its a .6 thread pitch.
