Rollei SLX / 6008i lens compatibilities (and NOT)

Curious whether someone knows where there's a list of which lenses work with which of the Rollei SLR's? I've added a SLX with a 80mm F2.8 HFT and it's a clean piece of work. Possible 6000 series in the future.... and I see folks running all sorts of lenses on the 6008i's (maybe more lenses than folks if you get my drift). At any rate, between the HFT, PQ and PQS... I'm not clear the differences per se, and which of the PQ and PQS can be run on an SLX (if any). Forward, I also wonder whether the HFT and PQ can be run on as well as the PQS on the 6008i. Thanks!

SLX cannot use PQ or PQS lenses. The 6008i can use HFT, PQ, and PQS lenses, but HFT lenses will use "stop-down" metering.

When I upgraded from SLX to 6008i, I got new 80mm and 50mm lenses for the open aperture metering. However, I kept my old 120 Makro Planar and 40mm Distagon from the SLX system. Those older lenses work pretty well on the 6008i. In auto modes it stops down immediately before the picture and meters at that time. To check a reading before taking the picture, the 'stop-down' readout is instant when you slide the meter switch. The big advantage of the modern lenses is continuous exposure display before the picture.

Actually this is inaccurate, the chart you link is correct.

Lens compatibility is as follows:

"no marking lenses" (no PQ/PQS) will work on all cameras starting SLX up to 6008i2 / 6008af (but will not work on the Hy6)
PQ-lenses will work on all cameras from SLX to Hy6 mod 2
PQS-lenses will permanently damage the camera if used on a SLX/6002/6006, so they can only be on the 6003/6008/6001 up to the Hy6 mod 2
AF-lenses will work with the 6008AF and the HY6
AFD-lenses will work with the HY6

If the body or the lens does not support a feature of the other, of course the pair will be "limited". But technically, they can be combined.

I have not tried if the AF/AFD lenses will work in manual focus (af-lens) or manual focus & auto-aperture (afd-lens) on a 6008, but there would actually be no point in buying an expensive recent auto focus lens for an older camera. I have seen claims in the internet that the afd lens will work on a 6008af body in automatic aperture mode, but once again, what would be the point.

Raushen: THanks. So with an SLX body, the HFT (no other markings) and PQ will work. This makes it pretty simple... as you're saying they work with all.
I'm not sure what the "S" adds to the lens in the PQS, but I guess unless you have one of the selected cameras (6001, 6003, 6008 or Hy6 mod 2), then don't go there.

PQ lenses are more expensive than the HFT only, but then seem to have wider application. I believe on the 6000 series they add aperture priority? IF that's right, then what do the PQS add?

I am not sure about the entire 6008-series, on my 6008i2 I get the following results:

"No-marking"-lens: manual or aperture priority only - reading of the exposure time for the selected aperture upon triggering only, no reading of the aperture on the LCD Display
PQ-lens: aperture or shutter priority and program AE - permanent display of aperture and exposure time on the LCD
PQS-lens: like a PQ lens but with 1/1000th (the PQ goes to 1/500 only)

In terms of no marking, there are also the EL lenses, "EL" refering to economy line. These lenses were part of the system 6008 and should have a PQ shutter, but lack the local on-the-lens display of the aperture in auto mode (and they do not have the BayVI filter connector). So if you attach an EL-lens to the SLX in shutter priority mode, you have no way of knowing the aperture actually selected by the camera.

I had to chose a lens for my 6008i2 some years ago, and I decided to go with a PQ lens. The premium is significant in comparison to an old SLX-lens, but then again: Why spend €€€ on an expensive body and then loose all the features in order to save a few bucks on the lens. PQ vs. PQS: the only additional feature of the PQS is the 1/1000th exposure time, if you need it.

Rauschen: THanks! Looked on eBay and there are some marked as "HFT EL" but not prominently. Sounds like these are in the "avoid" category? Yet I did not see "EL" actually marked on the lens. Would be unfortunate if it's not... meaning you have to do a serial # lookup to determine what you're dealing with. I will be sure to cross check with merchants before bidding. THanks for the heads up.

The EL lenses do not have the local display of the aperture (for auto aperture) on the lens, the BayIV filter connector (67 mm instead) and a few minor modification making them more economic. But - as far as I know - they have the same shutter and the same optical system as the PQ lenses. If you want to use it on an SLX, I´d personally consider the local display of the auto-aperture a significant advantage. For my 6008i2, there would not be any difference at all between the EL and the PQ lens, as all the readings are on the LCD display in the viewfinder anyway.

It is also a question of €€€: When I bought the PQ-lens from the bay, the price difference was 25-50€ between EL and PQ. At this difference, I simply bought the "full combo" because I could. Currently the price difference seems to be much bigger, so the EL-lenses might offer the similar value at a significant discount.

Its a bit of a mixed set too, 67mm filters instead of BayIV is actually a advantage for many.

Ah.... very re-assuring. Thanks! Very helpful to see this clearly marked. And yes, the local display of the auto-aperture is a significant advantage. Agree with your rationale for the "full combo". I'm looking at the 6008 models and a possible upgrade path, so this is very helpful. Working long exposures this morning with a Bronica SQ was almost painful. Very much looking forward to a camera with an easier way to manage this. SLX should be here Monday.
