rollei retro 80s!

My good friend Matt suggest I post up my 35mm experiences with Rollei 80s retro here. I've developed with a very simple Rodinal 1+50 dev each time, for ISO 80. I'll soon be getting a medium format camera, I'm looking forward to using the 80s there!

I've done a bit of IR work as well and generally shot all kinds of things with it, I like the results I get with Rodinal, it has a really nice character.

I really like this one - I believe was with a red filter, I use ISO 40 with the red filter. One wonders what exposure correction you'd use for a yellow filter...

Hey Pentaxuser. I consider the R72 to be have a filter value of 5 so I aim for... ISO 2.5 with the filter; you really need a tripod for doing IR with this film. I find this a plus, as I often convince myself I can hand hold shots Rollei IR 400 film for IR shots, when a tripod is the right answer for both film speeds with IR.

I generally use the sunny 16 rule for exposure or an EV chart as I don't really trust the meter's on my Spotmatics, and unreadable with the filter on.

I was afraid you'd say this. I keep hoping that someone will reply that Rollei 80 can be shot while handheld( looking for the Holy Grail, I think, it is called ) but at EI 2.5 I agree that hand-holding is out of the question. However there is a bit of hope in that if a factor of 5 applies to Rollei 400 then this reduces it to 12 and with sunny f11 rule( U.K. latitudes) and a wide angle so DoF is less restricted a hand-held shot might be possible with f 8

for me the 80s is to slow to handhold. But the 400S I hand hold all the time. For me the testing I did gave me the best shots at an EI of 12.5 for the 400s, or using box speed. So I can get 125 shutter speed at f4 or 2.8 with all my nikons and get sharp shots. yeh, composition is hard, but if you give your eye a few seconds to adjust you can see some outline of trees and items in bright sun reflecting IR light. try it it can be done. And the film (400s) is a great film as I said before.

Thanks this give me hope for hand-holding and all you need is an outline as that gives a rough guide for framing.

I've also hand held shots with the 400 IR film. Definitely can be done - I'd love to have a rangefinder for that kind of work.

A number of the photos in this album are hand held, with the IR filter. I can't see anything through the viewfinder, perhaps if I really jammed your eye against it. I used luck/intuition to frame them.

here are 2 more RR80s shots. both of them where shot at box speed, 80 and developed in Beutler 1+1+8 for 9 min at 20C. the one of the trees was shot with a dark red filter and it shows a lot of IR exposure on it. you can tell cause the image is not super sharp. IR light is focused at a different point. I didnt expect that much IR light to show or I would have adjusted the focus accordingly. but it does show you what you can get hand held with the 80 and still have hand hold-able speeds. the other is not a great shot but shows how sharp this film and developer can be. It also helped that I used a nikon 105 f2.5 ai lens. That lens is super sharp as well. just for giggles I plan on doing a crop enlargement of the willow style plant (not sure what kind it actually is) to see how sharp it would be in a 16x20 print from a 35mm neg.

I really liked the Rodinal results from there. So I shoot 2 rolls accordingly. I haven't developed them yet. Should be good.

I've also used Acurol-N as per SPUR suggestion. I liked the results so far.
