Over the last week I have been corresponding with the Rollei/Maco team about questions I had concerning their Rollei 400 IR film.
During that correspondence I inquired about the testing results of the Prototype film that a number of people tested last year. They asked that the following be passed along to all APUG members.

****************************************

Yes, we have completed all tests sucessfully with the new film, that
goes further in the IR range. Unfortunately, however, there is no
possibility right now, to offer this film as sheet film. The film is
currently cut and packaged as 35mm and roll film 120. The presentation
is scheduled for *OCTOBER 2008*, and samples will be available at the
Photoina in Cologne. The new film is named: _*ROLLEI RETRO 80 S*_ (S=
stands for synthethic, a different name for Kodak Estar). This new
film offers more extensive IR effects, than the ROLLEI IR, with its
higher ISO sensitivity.

*We would appreciate it, if you would post this information in the
APUG forum!*

FREESTYLE will take over all of our new films, including the
ROLLEI RETRO 80 S to North America. Thank you.

****************************************

This is wonderful news and I am definitely looking forward to using this new film:smile:

I am posting their answer to one of my questions concerning the curling of the Rollei 400 IR film in a separate post.

"...that goes further in the IR range..."

Actually the Rollei Infrared (Aviphot Pan 400 S) stretches further into the IR. However the Rollei Retro 80 S (Aviphot Pan 80) and the Rollei Superpan 200 Pro (Aviphot Pan 200) show a quite similar sensitization which does not stretch such far but rather have a more pronounced shoulder, whereas the type 400 film shows a rather shallow curve towards 820nm.

For the type 80 film is indicated in the original data sheet a resolution of about 300 LP, which is much more than that of the TMax 100 (200LP).
(The resolution for the former is indicated for a development for gamma 1, and its MTF I find hard to interpret.)

"...a different name for Kodak Estar"

Well, the base is made by Agfa. Except for their proprietory anti-static coating (Orgacom) they have no brand name for it. Let's just call it PET.

I have to correct myself:
Agfa has got a brand name for their PET base when used in cine stock. It is "Gevar"
(In addition to their Orgacon coating it also has got a lubricant added, which seems to be ommitted in the bases for still photography films.)
