If you want to preview "infrared effect" before shooting, here is a trick : some digital P&S cam sensors are somehow sensitive to IR light (not all - you may check if yours is, by pointing a TV/recorder IR remote control toward it and watch if you see a "light" on its screen).

So, if your digital P&S is "seeing IR", set it on highest ISO, put your IR filter in front of its lens and shoot : you will get an image in improbable false colors, and get an idea of the IR effect you might get on your IR film with your IR filter - for the subject you intend to shoot, especially in the "greens" (trees, grass, etc.) that will appear with very light colors.
