I've a lovely Rollei 35S which lost the name ring on the front of the lens. It just disappeared one day. Fell off it seems. So, I found another ring on Ebay and now have it but cant see any way for it to fasten/thread/mount to the front of the lens. I did some Googling and found a comment that they are glued on... really? Is this correct? I guess it would be ok, but seems.. I don't know, a little un Rollei like I guess.
If it is correct, any recommendations as to the proper glue and gluing process would be welcome. If incorrect, a hint on how the ring is supposed to be mounted would be much appreciated. As it is now, the ring just drops into place with nothing to hold it in.
I have a 35S that is also missing the ring. Looking at where it goes, I don't see any indication or evidence of glue/adhesive. Are there 3 pins on the back side of the ring? Looks like there are three holes that pins might go in, and I could potentially being those being glue points.
I've been looking for a ring for mine for 2+ years...
No pins on the back, but a couple of notches. As you can see in the picture its a stepped ring with two notches in the raised section. I can see no use for that inner ring, it doesn't index into anything and the ring is free to turn when in its location on the front of the lens. I wonder is there is a second part that fell off that I still need to find.
The ring on the GX and FX is also merely glued on. I lost the HFT Planar ring off my FX in Mexico and had another sent to me from Germany. I re glued it with contact cement and all is good now 9 years later. I think probably on occasion there was insufficient glue put on.
I did some further Googling and found a bit more detail. For anyone who might be interested, I found this, archived from the old camera repair forum...
Sorry for posting in an old thread, but the same has happened to my Rollei 35S. I managed to keep the original lens ID ring, however, but I need to get it glued back on. I am not really sure I want to do this myself, however, for fear of spilling glue on the lens. What exactly is rubber cement, and is it readily available in, e.g. hobby stores? I am based in Brussels, Belgium, so I need to find out what the equivalent would be here. Many thanks!
I ended up using Pliobond as I had some here already and hadn't heard of any concerns with it getting brittle over time. Thanks for the heads up 4season, I'll keep an eye on mine. As mentioned, use just a little. If you look at how the ring will be positioned you can find points where the glue will be the most effective. I just used a toothpick to place a small amount of glue at those points. So far so good. I also started using a clip on lens cap with the camera. Since it's always in the case, and a lens cap just slowed me down I hadn't been using one. Now with the lens cap I figure I have a chance of noticing the lens ring falling off. IF it comes loose with the cap in place at least, I should maybe notice it falling free as I uncap the lens.
