Rodinal is becoming very hard to come by, especially by shipment.
Has anyone done careful comparisons with Rollei R09? It's more expensive, but I was thinking about trying it.
I'm mostly interested in grain structure. I used it exclusively in the 70's, mostly with the Tri-x of that time.
I'm currently using the today version of Tri-x (and occasionally FP4+) with HC110, and it's pretty nice, but I'd like to see what Rodinal would look like.
Rollei One Shot R09 is made by Compard KG and is similar to Adox Rodinal but a slightly different formula. They’re both listed for the same times in the Massive Development Chart. There are discussions about which is closer to the original Rodinal. I normally use HC-110 but have a bottle of R09 that I’m using to develop Tri-X. Here’s the thread: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/tri-x-developed-in-rodinal.193470/
From Freestyles’ website, Adox Rodinal is scheduled to be in stock by early September.
These were shot w/ Tri-X at 250 EI, and developed in R09 at 1:25. I found that combination to be a little fussy about exposure. Expect some serious grain if you blow it, and it doesn't look as attractive as Rodinal grain. I prefer Rodinal grain and tonality, but that could be because I have a lot more experience w/ it.
I only use any of the current Rodinal with 35mm fast films, just too grainy, with slow films like Foma 100 and Tmax 100 R09 seems to pretty close the Agfa formula. I do like it with Foma 400 in 6X9 and 4X5.
