Has anyone ever tried concentrated Rodinal (like 1:2) as paper developer? How did it work? How long does it take to develop to completion? I'm currently using Dektol but I'm curious to experiment.

1:2? NO no no. Trust me...you don't want to do that.

Normal film dilution for Rodinal is 1+25 or 1+50.

Check this: (there was a url link here which no longer exists). Never tried it, though, but I have a mind to.

Yes, it works. I mixed up some Rod for film, made the wrong dilution and used it as a paper dev. Worked ok, nothing great, nothing bad. Sorry, I don't remember what dilution I used, but 1+2 is way too much. Try 1+50, you can always add more Rod.

Test with some 5x7. Use 3ml in 150ml solution
volume, one-shot. Then go from there. I draw the
line at 3 1/2 minutes; single sheet processing. Rodinal
is a one-shot extremely concentrated developer.
BTW, 3ml is about as little as is used for one
roll of film. If that's enough chemistry for a
roll of film it certainly is enough for a
small print. Dan

well not actually rodinal but the acetaminophen developer. I use it between 1:10 & 1:20

(also used the same formula to process the negative for the image above)

but film is not developed to completion, while paper is (pretty much, anyway).

And, there is 3 X more silver halide in film (on average) than in paper. And, paper develops in equivalent situations in about 1/5th to 1/10th the time to get a good density.

One of my biggest complaints was the fact that it would get very dark, so you could hardly judge the development, but would still work. If you don't depend on development by inspection, 1:25 works pretty well. We have known for years that the color or optical density of Rodinal has little or no bearing on its activity. The color is the stongest part of it.

Try 1+20 for paper development. I found it to be quite nice, although it gives a little lower contrast than other paper developers.

I've successfully used Rodinal as a re-developer after chromium and other bleaches, just another colour choice in my situation.
