I just payed $70 for a Rodenstock Apo Ronar 240/9, I think it is a lens that came from an enlarger or from a Sinar camera. It is almost new and in perfect condition, but it has no shutter, and I need a shutter!
I see there is the aperture scale ring from 9 to 180.
I posted a similar thread to another forum and they were nice and explained me that it is a barrel lens and probably copal 1, but not sure if it is possible to add a shutter because of the thread size.

Any experience with this lens or this dilemma?

Thank you very much,
C

My guess is, that it depends on age of your lens. I have APO Ronar 300 f9 MC (so it's very new for APO Ronar) that came in originally installed Copal 1 shutter. On Largeformat info there is a comparison table and it list APO Ronar 240 in Copal 1 shutter....

So you should provide serial number, or simply try fit your lens in Copal 1 shutter, if you could.

Here is my Serial Number:
9991163.
What is Largeformat info?

To check if it fits (it came with its lensboard) I have to unscrew the lens from the board and then I have to unscrew the cells from the rear and front part? Or I just have to try to screw the copal 1 shutter to those parts without removing the cells from the barrel?

Thank you

I have an older 240/9 that won't fit into any shutter directly. I have seen these in #2 and #3 shutters, but never a #1. I can't offhand remember the thread diameter for the cells, but I'm pretty sure it's too big to fit into a #1 shutter, even with an adapter.

Your lens was made between 1977 and 1979 according to the serial number data I have. Your best bet would be to contact S.K.Grimes (www.skgrimes.com) and ask them if lenses of this vintage fit easily into shutters or not.

FWIW, the flange mounting on the APO-ronars in barrel is so far to the rear that they fit nicely in front of a Sinar shutter. It also makes them easy to front mount in front of other shutters should you want to try that.

Huh? As I mentioned in my previous post, I have a late (1990) 300/9 APO Ronar that came in Copal 1! On largeformat info page 240/9 is also listed in Copal 1. And Dead Link Removed But I do agree, contact S.K.Grimes might be the best option, since both sources are for late models.

To try if it fits, you have to unscrew the cells from barrel and try to screw them in to shutter. But remember, DO NOT USE FORCE!

The late multicoated Apo-Ronars screw directly into standard shutters. Earlier ones do not: the cells have a different thread. I don't have a definite date for the switch, i.e. I don't know if all multicoated Apo-Ronars will fit directly into a shutter and I don't know if all single-coated ones won't. You need to look and see.

Lenses as old as mine (late 60's, single coated) can only be mounted in a shutter if you get a machinist like S.K.Grimes to make adapter rings. The rings need to match the threads on the shutter and lens cells, and ensure that the spacing of the cells is correctly maintained. The lens cells are too large to fit into the throat of a No.1 shutter, but will squeeze into a (rare, and only available used) No.2. If you want a modern shutter, a No.3 is necessary.
