If you look beyond his hairy men you'll find lots of sensual rocks ...and some incredibly subtle lighting. Large format, of course.

Yes incredibly good photography and editing skills, but for me its a bit too much technique over substance.....and I prefer the other way around.
And nothing wrong with hairy men shots, I have one in the current beautiful photo comp...

I'd like to know his strategy for finding the light he finds in his "rocks" photos. Seems maybe artificial, but is that likely?

My guess would be chiefly making. Many ways of doing that. Dont know if he is doing it all in the darkroom or has a hybrid process. Easier to make digital transfer masks than try and do it the hard way, but there is plenty of tutorials available which shows both ways.......either way it takes a lot of skill to do it as good as he. Im always making messy masks.

If look up masking you will see plenty of pictures similar to his, his are up there with the technically best.

...so..you don't think he awaited the light in his rock photos?

Looks more like he was using the sun low on the horizon, could be other formations blocking the sun to give a selected illumination. Then dodge and burn to even things out, maybe masking. Some of his other works look like the were defiantly masked. There are lots of ways of getting that effect (if you know what you are doing) with out artificial light, good eye good timing, could of used reflectors on some who knows......and large format gives you that incredible depth.
It wouldnt be too hard to do similar with Erics canyon pictures, just would require a bit more dodge and burn.
