RIP - Martine Franck

Martine Franck, a Magnum Photos member for 32 years, has died. She was 74.

Born in Belgium, and was Henri Cartier-Bresson's second wife and president of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation, established to promote the photojournalist's work. But she was also a photographer in her own right, joining the Vu agency in the 1960s.

A very severe photograph, indeed.

Hmm. Looking at her proof sheet, the presence of sharply light-struck trailers at both ends of the roll suggests that her Tri-X may have been bulk-loaded. Is there another way for that to happen?

Not important, unless her chosen frame had been #3a or #37a.

The hammock shot is gorgeous, and it gives me hope because, unlike HCB's Decisive Moment, Ms. Franck had to really work the scene to find that image, and a bit of luck too. An entire roll, of a hammock. One image. And worth every bit and more.

Yeah, she snapped almost like digital there, though apart from that hammock shot, there's a cpl of shots on the two first strips that I'd love to see too.

I had the pleasure of meeting her in Paris at a reception honoring the centenary of HCB's birth, hosted by the American Ambassador. She was very gracious, and very dismayed that the French Gov't had not similarly recognized the event. I'd have loved to have had the opportunity to sit down with her sometime to talk photography, but it never came to pass. Given how vital she was only four years ago, I'm surprised and sorrowed by her passing.

I read a book about the history of Magnum, and she was a special lady and a great photographer. Very sad.

A remarkable photographer she was. Too bad she is always mentioned first as the wife of HCB, and only then as a photographer in her own right.

I read an article about Henri Cartier-Bresson, and he bulk loaded, as far as the article mentioned using a change-bag, doing it manually without any bulk loader though... Reason he did it was to get consistency in his negatives, and bought loads of bulk rolls from the same production batch.

Maybe/probably she did bulk load for the same reason, but had a bulk-loader, less cumbersome to load like that..
