Ries tripod + Airplane

I have an older Ries tripod. The points on the end of the tripod legs have me wondering if I need to remove the lower sections of the tripod legs and check them in with the rest of my luggage.

Has anyone had any issues taking their Ries tripod through security?

Can you reverse the lower portion of the legs so the spikes don't stick out?

Tripod on plane

Hi, In the US all tripods must be checked as luggage,as per TSA regs.

Yes I can reverse the legs, though the points are still visible as you know. I have not been required to check in tripods on previous flights.

In my experience the TSA rules seem to be enforced arbitrarily. Is that others' experience as well?

I have flown with a cheap, but full-size, camera tripod several times in my carry-on, FWIW. My understanding is that it is against the rules however.

put some black(or darker colored) gaffers/duct tape over the pointy-ends. What they don't see won't hurt em !

Get a rise caring case. I use one every time I fly and check it in. Get a TVA lock for it and there are the only ones that can get into the case. Buy them at target.

YES!

In fact, it is difficult to know what the rules are. They seem to make them up on an as needed basis.

There are no regulations about tripods on the TSA website.

"You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint. The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight. Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport.

Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft. Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport."

It is up to the agents running the security gate. I have carried on my tripod without problem on domestic flights.
