Ridiculous price for Rolleiflex 2.8E2

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me why this camera fetched up to $3700? After many years shooting with Rollei and still keep some now (Aurum, 2.8F White Face, 3.5F...) I know that some Rolleiflex cameras can go to very high prices, like Platin, Aurum, or White Face, but I can't find anything special about this camera. Checked from Rolleiclub for the serial number and price, I found it's just in the normal range. Did I miss something here?

I just saw an Ex+ 2.8F White Face sold for $2500 at KEH, a mint 2.8FX for $2700, and I was like wth going on here with this 2.8E2.

That's an insane price for a 2E I paid much less than half for my almost mint F2.8 Whiteface 293xxx less than 6 months ago. Maybe a little bit of luck involved but 3700$ for an E?

I have a 1968 Camaro Convertible, non-R/S fully restored that I have owned since Feb. 1974, as my first car. It's sitting out there now, not 60 feet from where I sit. It's yours for 5mil, or you can see my undertaker about it and save the 5 million. Might even be at the estate auction cheaper than that. That is, if you're willing to wait a while.

WoW ! I was GIVEN a 2.8E Xenotar about 1959 vintage serial 1652155 by a Widow Lady some years ago and it takes the 35mm 'Rolleikin' attachment -- taking lens is slightly scratched as it was the camera of Chief Photographer of the Romford Recorder newspaper here in Essex ( UK) and he sold it to a Rotary Club member who I knew and I kept offering to check it out for him but he never let me see it -- then he died and his widow got in touch with me and also gave me two Olympus XA2 cameras in boxes and an OM2n for my boy !

It's possible the winning Bidder thought he or she was actually buying a 2.8F, the seller only stated at the bottom of the page that it was in fact a 2.8E on the 19th, the winner began bidding on the17th.

I have a pair of 2.8Es (both version 1's) that I paid roughly $500 apiece for. For $3700, it had better have aperture priority auto-exposure and a motor drive (and make your farts smell like roses, and scrub dishes and do the windows to boot)!

Yeah. Man, I think $3700 is way too high even with 2.8F. With $2000 you can buy a pristine 2.8F from KEH. The seller misled with the post of 2.8F, but I can't think of anyone who is willing to spend $3700 without basic knowledge of Rollei, and not only one but last 2 bidders reached to that high.

Yeah something very fishy about this. I suspect some shill biding going on here with the seller trying to establish a "value" to make an insurance claim or something. Makes no sense at all.

Hi Pete,
just a quick question re your rolleikin - will it work without the replacement 35mm dial for the outside? i have a rolleikin kit for my 51 Automat that is complete except its missing the one dial!

I am puzzled by all this. Would you guys rather these cameras were being thrown in the trash because no one puts a value on them?
I don't take everything I see on the Internet as Gospel. Things can be finagled, made to seem to be what they are not.

I'm sure the seller didn't think the price was "ridiculous", and " caveat emptor" (let the buyer beware) if the buyer hadn't done sufficient research to know what he was actually, paying for because in law ignorance is no excuse.

I'm ignorant on the Rollei TLR models, but nevertheless am amazed about prices for cameras that to me look rather normal.

Because it is easily 3-4x what this model usually goes for. There's nothing special about this particular one that anyone can tell. And having 3-4 bidders near this price range makes it all the more fishy. This is not a real auction. It was manipulated for some purpose.
