I just checked the Revini manual for the tiny cube meter. It says the total working time for good LR44 alkaline batteries is about 3 hours, but the batteries will last about a year in the meter if unused.
The takeaway here is that you don't want to be constantly checking meter readings needlessly, or you'll run down the battery. If you're shooting film, you probably won't be shooting a lot anyway, due to cost. It makes sense to take a reading only when the light has changed. That's O.K. by me, and what I'd do anyway.
