I have a can of HP5+ which I need to get the leader back out of. Since this is only about the 2nd time in the last 30 or so years this has happened, I don't think it is worth spending more than the cost of the roll of film to get the leader back out... so I was hoping maybe someone has a good suggestion.

I guess I could have folks take it on travel & go thru bunches of x-ray machines to see if it gets fogged. Or I could freeze it & see how well it works as an ice cube in an alcohol-laden refreshment. Ooh - I could do some drop tests on the "pointy" end to see how far you can drop it before it pops open.

I suppose I could just drop it in the trash.

I do this for our students all the time...I take an old piece of 4x5 film, cut a 1/2" x 5" piece from it. I stick a piece of double sided tate on the end (about 1/2" x 3/4")

I then stick it thru the felt of the cassette (tape side down) and wind the film up until it sucks the piece of 4x5 in about half way. The I pull the piece of 4x5 film out and 80% of the time the 35mm leader comes out with it. The other 20% of the time I repeat the steps and get the leader out.

Your local one hour photo place or photo store with processing will have a leader puller. I would think they would do you the favor of pulling the leader out for you - takes about 5 seconds.

I thought what the heck and bought two types/brands of leader extractors thinking I could put them out for the students to use. I could get neither to work -- the instructions for assembling the space shuttle must be easier to follow!

I tossed them out, and went back to the tape. And besides, when worried students come by my office with their film canisters, it greatly enhances my status as the local photo god to be able to extract the leaders for them!

Glad it worked for you!
