replacement for rollei retro 100 aka apx 100

So I am running short on my 100 ft roll of rollei retro and really love it but its no longer available through freestyle and I hate @#$y. So could kentmere 100 be a decent replacement? Its the "look" not the speed , grain or sharpness I am concerned with.

Rollei RPX 100 (??) more or less the same as the Kentmere emulsion but also available in 120 roll film format and in 30,5m/100ft.

Just FYI if you can find any Tura 100 is supposedly APX 100. I found some bulk rolls on eBay a year or so ago.

I believe there is something called Rollei RPX, and is the same or a similar emulsion to APX, but I haven't found a US source for that, I want to try it, but as of right now I can't get it without waiting 2 weeks for shipping.

rollei retro 100 is still available in 35mm from macodirect.de I've ordered in the US from them and had no problems. doesnt look like any 100ft rolls but good deals on bulk cannisters. also they have the retro 100 tonal in 100ft rolls but I dont know how that differs.

No. To my knowledge today nobody coats film which is similar to APX100.
RPX are nice films (from what I've heard) but definitely not APX.

Since I have never used it and my experience with APX100 is limited to 3 rolls: I have no idea.
"suitable replacement" is a phrase that means nothing to me. Suitable for what? Same ISO? Same size? Same technology (b&w negative)? Suitable for generating sales?

I used to hear that, but could never get that look out of it. There is a Rollei 80s which looks VERY much like apx 100 tonally, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet. I'm still using their Ortho25, and loved the R³ when it was still available.


My recommendation would be to give the 80s a go, and see how that does ya. Can't be bad.

Has anyone heard any news about the new release from Mirko?

Is that close, or still a work in progress. I do know they reported that the first generation wasn't up to their satisfaction, but I haven't heard about any more results.

There is a Rollei 80s which looks VERY much like apx 100 tonally, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet.

Rollei 80s has extended red sensitivity and because of this colours are rendered different than with panchromatic film. Red is very light and with a 720nm filter you can even get the wood effect.
AFAIR nobody who used both claimed that the 80s is like APX100.
Nevertheless an interesting film; I use it for IR (normal b/w is done with Acros in the 100ASA range).

Lots of good info here.

APX 100 is unique in how it renders color. TMax 400 gives about the same grain and sharpness as APX 100. Use a light green filter to get as close to its color rendition as possible.

You may also wish to underexpose TMax 400 and shoot it at EI 640 or so, to resemble the shadow detail of APX 100, which had a slightly longer toe. A developer like Xtol 1+1 will serve you well with this film.
