replacement for APX 100???

cmo, you won't find any film that will match all the characterstics of former APX100. It was a unique film, like all the others.

What I can say is that Retro 80S is much closer to APX25 than APX100. Good replacement.

And I agree with Robert: Fomapan is in the same spirit as APX100. But it is not the same.

Fomapan 100 is a poor replacement for APX100 as it has nothing like the speed of the Agfa film, it's not bad but quirky in that it requires about 2/3 the dev times of other brands and tends to rise alarmingly in contrast if over developed, it is capable of good quality but not as high as APX 100.

actually, there is no such thing as agfa APX100 replacement. poetically and practically.

- i used the rollei retro 100 and it was super close (actually the same emulsion but different base etc). i dont know about the newer rollei retro 80s that appears on macodirect.de.
- acros, is a great film, probably the best modern stuff together with tmax400-2. but it is very far from the sexy look of apx100, and it is not that flexible too, u cannot really play with it. think about it as the difference between the correctness of tmax400-2 and charm of tri-x400.
- suggestions in order of appearance: (1) try the retro80s, maybe it is similar to retro100. (2) efke/adox 50, which, with some experiment will get u close. u can easily expose efke50 as 100 too. ok, maybe not exact same, but very charming. rodinal is good to start with since it worked amazing on apx100 and works equally good on efke. (3) other options are ilford fp4 and kodak plus-x... those two are not exactly agfa, but again, with some experiments u can get close. strange but on 35mm i felt that plus-x is can get a bit closer while on 120 i felt that fp4 gets closer among those two. dont know it, but i would also give a chance to efke/adox 100 as well.

Adox have stated that their new 400 film will be first. This film is stated to be still tested.
In contrast to what has been stated before, this film can't be produced according to the Agfa-formula, but is intended to be as close as possible.

In that case we will soon have discussions like "is this really like APX?" and troll statements like "Rollei XYZ is a much better replacement though it's an amateurishly relabeled chinese colour film"...

Shouldn't we start discussions like that in the Lounge or in the Soap Box?

APX is so unique and lovely film that i didnt found yet something with the same characteristics. Rollei 80s is also a great film but not as APX...

Adox claimed to be using some of the Agfa emulsions, but the description of their CMS100 does not sound like what I used to get from APX100, which was a truly outstanding film. I don't know of anything that resembled it then or resembles it now.

Peter, this new Adox film is the successor to APX100 & manufactured by former Agfa employees.

The Adox brand name belonged to Dupont who took over Dr Schleussner's Fotowerke GmbH, later Dupont sold the coating line to EKFE along with the licence to make Adox films, the trade name went out of use and lapsed. Years later Fotoimpex resurrected the brand name for films, papers, chemistry that they distribute and in some cases have manufactured.

I half disagree. If you dilute your developer, times are fine as long as you are not working at 24 degs C. Contrast seems just as manageable as every other film if your base time is not too short. Naturally if working at 5mins, even 30s is a big change. I have found it no more or less forgiving than any other traditional film personally, even in tough wildly varying scene contrast. I find I can pump out easy printing negs even when scenes vary a lot all on one roll.

Grain is not quite as fine as APX but not far off. I think its resolution is a bit behind APX100 if looking for really fine detail. Speed is about 1/3 stop slower in my recollection.

In terms of pictorial look, Foma 100 can look quite similar though. Certainly a far closer match in terms of look than FP4+, Delta 100 or Tmax, etc. Just my opinion!

Or maybe the new Rollei Retro 100 Tonal which will be introduced in June 2010.
Differences with APX 100/ Rollei Retro 100 are the shorter sensitivity till 625nm instead of 650nm and the clear Polyester base instead of grey Tri-Acetate.
This new film will be partial made by Efke.

And very important, available in all sizes: 35mm, 120 roll film and sheet film formats.

This film is still to come. And the ISO 400 version is stated to be introduced first anyway.

I will be in Hamburg (Germany) this week for an invitation (Rollei-Maco) so I can report how far this project has been succeeded.
Maybe some pre-liminary samples are already available.

This is a film specified by Rollei-Maco and partial made by Efke, packed (35mm) by Photostar. The specification will be according the Maco PO100C film, produced earlier (2002-2004) but with much higher Q.C. specifications. Efke and Foma will handle the 120 roll film configuration.

The film has simmular specifications like the Fuji Acros film, short in extended wavelenght, 625nm, about 180 ln/mm, iso 100, clear polyester base and available in all formats.

Small correction: The film will be made by Agfa Gevaert, Foma and Efke can handle the 120 roll film configuration. In sheet film the sizes 4x5" and 8x10"will be available first.

APX100 is very great film, you can get some NP type APX100 bulk film in a very cheap price.
