Removing this old leather from this Kodak Stereo camera?

This Kodak Stereo camera is in good working condition, but the leather is peeling off and turning it into an eyesore.
Some areas have a kind of pleasant patina, but some areas are simply dead and gone.

Before I can try to source some newer materials, though, I am trying to peel it off and it is easier said than done. The fabric-like material is glue on pretty well in the areas where it won't come off...

Any tips on how to remove these coverings?

It is much easier if you have already come to peace with the fact that it won't come off in one piece. Try lighter fluid or alcohol. I find that lighter fluid is more likely to work, but a little alcohol always makes things better.

Be sure to use the lighter fluid next to an open flame.

Acetone is more likely to remove the old glue.
Heat a pan of water to boiling, soak a sponge or rag in the water, ring the excess out, place the sponge or rag on the area to be removed for 3 to 5 minutes. Repeat as necessary.
Water should not drip from the sponge or rag.

I've tried that stuff. It doesn't work worth a damn. It's some new age water based stuff with no "dangerous chemicals". Spit will work as well.

Its worked well for me.

Edit:
Goo Gone leaves a hard to remove oily residue.
Goof Off needs to be used outdoors with a respirator. Might damage some camera parts.
Krud Cutter is just that, crud. Water or spit works better.
Naphtha diluted with 90% Alcohol 40/60 works well, pure naphtha can damage camera parts. Lighter fluid is 90%+ naphtha.
