Hi All,

I want to remind you... when you Call me or anyone and leave a message. PLEASE, when you leave your phone number say it slowly.
So many time... people will tell me the problems they are having with their shutter at a normal pace, but when they get to their phone number, it's is spoken so fast I can't understand it and I can't call back.
I don't know why we all seem to do this.
It would be nice if repeat you name and phone number slowly at the end of your message.

So, if you have called me and I never called you back this is probably the reason why.

Carol, as resident curmudgeon I'd say your issue is one with a general decline in phone etiquette, reflecting an overall coarsening of society. Grumble, harrumph.

It used to be considered polite behavior, when calling anyone other than family or intimate friends, to say something like "Hi, this is Mike Sebastian calling for Elvis Presley about his order for peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches", it being incumbent upon the caller to make his business clear. This before the general availability of answering machines.

I'm 45 so we're not talking about the telephone party-line days of yore.

Heck, I find it increasingly difficult to understand the speech hurled at me day in and day out, even by those who claim English as their mother tongue.

Damn I'm old.

I find this is a common problem. I'm not sure if it's bad etiquette or simply that people "know" their phone number so well that they don't think before talking and just recite it real fast.

The equally-annoying alternative to this motor mouth approach that I also find prevalent is that they just trail off into a whisper when leaving the phone number.

Either way, it's very frustrating!

I have the same problem with clients and friends. End up listening to the message three or four times trying to figure out the phone number. Or, they forget to give me their area code, as if I know all the area codes in America!

Unless I feel it to particularily important, I'll try to get the number a couple times from replaying the message, then give up. If someone does not take the time and consideration to communicate well, I don't feel a great need to bother to communiccate with them.

That said, caller ID is helpful.

I find that if I let the string go slack between the tin cans the message becomes unintelligible.

I USED to know all the area codes 15 years ago. I guess I'm getting old too. And less geeky. (used to have a a customer service job and you got to figure out where people called from after a while).
