I'm trying to remember a camera bag (brand name) that had front access doors for lenses without having to open the bag. I believe it was a backpack. I am essentially looking for something that allows quick lens access thru a small Velcro type of door without having to open and dig into a bag, in either a waist (preferably), shoulder or small backpack configuration. I need to carry 4 small 35mm prime lenses under 50mm in FL and maybe if big enough a 70-210 lens. Any ideas before I start to create one?
I want to say it was either Tamrac or Tenba, not Domke, because Domke's claim to fame was the soft-sided canvas bags. I haven't seen one of them advertised in ages, though- I think that product went out somewhere around Y2K. Most likely Tamrac.
Your right John, it was the Photo Backpacker. It has a cassette door that when open angled out for lens access. I do remember deciding between it and a Lowepro which I went for instead. They aren't made anymore btw. Maybe I can make something custom.
How about putting together a Kinesis belt system (www.kgear.com)? The only product of theirs I have is a tripod strap, and it seems to be of good quality, and all reports I've read of their other items have been positive, if you are looking for this sort of setup. One of their representatives used to be quite active on a few forums (and perhaps still is), and he seemed to be an honest and knowledgeable person, and not too mercenary about plugging the product line.
This probably isn't quite what you are looking for, but the Tenba Shootout backpacks have a pocket on each side that can be configured so it becomes an access to the interior volume. So depending on how you arrange the dividers inside, you can have two compartments be accessible without opening the main panel.
