reductones

Reductones have been mentioned in a few (very few) posts here at photrio. They can be formed by reacting certain sugars with alkali, and they are developing agents with a chemical structure somewhat like a simplified version of ascorbate.

I would like to learn more about them. Especially, has anyone here tried making and using them as developers? Any other info would also be appreciated.

i'm not a "mixology-type' photographer and use primarly off-the-shelf products. I was intrigued by the title and had no clue as to what reductones are, (other than knowing ascorbic acid).
