The first commercial "redscale" films were made by Maco.

The idea behind that all is a combination of the effect of coloured couplers in masked films and the high sensitivity of the red-sensitive layer.

But basically one could use regular film with a red filter on the lens.

That's true but then by extension I could use my digital with a redscale filter in PS too. But I don't. I like shooting film. Even backwards.
