For cameras, such as Holgas, where it is desirable to cover the red film advance window, are there options better than tape? I have pictures of gadgets you stick on the camera that have a sliding cover. I wonder if those are any good, and if they are, where do you get them?

In all my years I have never had trouble with light coming through the window. I'm sure it is possible, but I think you would really have to work at it.
As I have quite some cameras from the 1930s or so and nearly the whole range of Lomography cameras, I use these privacy covers for those I use more often and I'm pleased with them. Yes these do have problems with light coming through the window. For the others it's just black tape...
