Recommended CI for scanning?

What is the recommended CI (or gama) to develop negatives for scanning and than printing on a photo inkjet printer? Is the recommended CI different for films developed in "conventional" developers versus staining developers?

BTW, the scanner I use is Epson 4990.

When films are shot and developed to be scanned, are the considerations to determine the effective EI any different from when intended to enlarged and printed in a dark room?

Most people with experience in scanning B&W negatives with different scanning equipment appear to be of the opinion that the best scans can be made with negatives of lower CI than would be considered normal for printing in the darkroom. My own experience suggests that a CI of .35 - .45 may be about optimum, but so far as I know there have been no good tests of this.

On the other hand, if you are developing to print in the darkroom as well as scan, there is considerable latitude in the process of scanning. Best thing is to just make a scan with the 4990, adjust the file, and see how it prints. I have personally scanned negatives with CI up to .70 with the 4990 and was able to make nice prints from the files.
