I'll get a RB67 Pro SD with 2 lens tomorrow (65 C and a 180 K/L). I'm exciting. I know this camera. It was my first MF (RB 67 Pro) camera 17 years ago. I changed for something else in the past and today I return to this workhorse camera because I love 6x7 format. So, I want to know if there is somebody who use this camera with a monopod instead a tripod for some applications, wedding or others. What are your appreciation?
Use monopod with all handheld cameras for steadiness. Not quite tripod steadiness but almost always better than handhold, especially with the larger cameras.
Monopods are helpful with MF SLRs. I notice between 1-2 stops advantage when using one with a Hasselblad (able to get sharp photos around 1/15 or 1/30 instead of 1/60). I suspect similar with the RB. If you are really steady or can lean back against something you may be able to get more than that, but don't expect a tripod replacement. 1-2 stops can make a big difference with getting a sharp shot with a long lens when you are limited by the 1/500 top shutter speed, and I mostly use a monopod when I am shooting with lenses longer than 150mm.
Handling is quite nice and it can help with composition. I think they feel quite natural with a prism finder. WLF seems more suited to handheld or tripod for me.
I guess I'm a weirdo. I have an RB-SD and I have a manfrotto mono-pod. I find it un-necessay. With WLF, I can steady this big camera against my body. I can lean on something to steady myself when necessary. I don't find it beneficial for my applications. I typically don't go slower than 1/30 and my longest lens is 180mm.
I take the monopod when I am travelling with my RB and my wife. My wife doesn't like to stand around while I shoot interiors of churches or dark alleyways with the RB on a tripod. The monopod is helpful as well as easy to carry and set up. When I am traveling with LF equipment, which requires major set up, I don't bring my wife.
