Why do you mention the floating-element design? It would not change depth of focus as such.
And with the lens set at 3m it likely would not yet be active at all.
The 50mm has a floating barrel that you adjust. I selected 3m instead of 3ft.
Edit - I think i am still reading it wrong. I read the horizontal white line instead of the orange curve line. I think I got it now. Will just see. Is 3m close enough if the building was across the road? At F22 the scale shows infinity is within reach.
3m is 10ft. The road will be quite a bit more than that. At f/22 though and focus at 3m DOF probably gets you to infinity anyway so it wouldn't matter. As for the floating ring, no idea but chances are it won't matter.
it wont make any noticeable difference at f22. the FLE compensates edge sharpness and barreling but its so slight, you may not see it at all. most people just leave it set at infinity.
I agree, the FE is fine tuning for critical work, the difference may only be visible in the corners, if at all. Did it look OK in the viewfinder? That is what is on your film.
As I understand it, the biggest effect of an adjustment to the floating element is to optimize the adjustment for field curvature - i.e. at the edges and in the corners. If your subject isn't flat, you may never see the result.
If you were to poll users, I expect you would get a 100% "Yes" answer to the question: "Have you ever forgotten to adjust the floating element, and still been happy with the result?"
-) floating elements (seperate movements of only a group of lens elements) are employed to use against abberations that occur at wide-angle lenses when focusing at nearer objects. They will not show effect at focusing as such.
-) in lenses for 35mm cameras (if there is such at all) the floating will take place automatically steered by a cam in the barrel.
Likely that movement will not even start at long focusing distances.
-) with larger formats the critical distance starts more early due to the larger imaging scale, that is why your lens already has a 10m setting for its manual operated floating elements.
The floating elemens at your lens set at 3m when the lens is focused at infinity should have less effect than them set a 3m and focused at 1m.
