RB-67 Wide angle advice.....

What's a good wide angle lens for the RB-67? I have the 127 atm, but it's failing for some shots.

There is also a 65mm. I have, and use, both the 50mm and the 65mm. It's like having a 28 and a 35 for 35mm film.

Obviously there can't be an accurate comparison as the format is not the same aspect ratio but I would think the equivalents are closer to 24mm and 28mm.

Not at all. Whilst the field of view across the diagonal may be similar the w/a feel of a lens is down to the horizontal measurement. I think
the comparison of 50 and 65mm in 6x7cm format to 28 and 35mm in 135 format is well judged. With a 6x8 back and 50mm lens, the coverage is more like a 24mm.

I did not care for the rb 50 it is the only rb lens that I didn't get along with. It is not nearly as well corrected as the rz 50 uld version. (On the other hand, the uld is pricey!) I bought an rz for two reasons: the 50 uld and the 110/2.8.

I do like the rb 65 KL very much, it is superb. It is also favourably priced.

Try the 65 on a 6x8 back, I bet you'll like it!

Responding to keithwms last post. I've had both 50 and 65 lenses. Both very good. Maybe the newer 50 is better but the old one is good enough that I have to take it on faith that a better lens can be made. Or, maybe his older 50 was not up to par.

No, I had the newest rb 50 (given the small price difference, it's never made sense to me to invest in older rb lenses). And I don't think it was an issue of a bad copy, the rb 50 and the 50 uld are quite different designs. The rb 50 is not a low dispersion lens.

By the way, when I had the rb 50, I also compared it to the 50 on my mamiya 6. Not good, not good. The rb 50 wasn't even approximately in the same league. Mind you, the rangefinder 50 might well be among the very best lenses ever made. The 50 uld, on the other hand, seems almost as good, especially considering that it covers 6x7.

So, begging to differ but the rb 50 is not very good in my opinion. Of course I am happy if you are happy, and certainly we all have different needs. But when somebody asks for advice, I'll call it as I see (or saw) it. I have written many positive things about other rb lenses, but the 50, nah.
