Radio trigger for Nikon flashes

Some of the nikon flash units have built-in radio triggers, correct?
Are there any shoe-mount gizmos that can fire them (using their own internal slave)

Not aware of any with radio triggers. SU-4 is an optical trigger Nikon put out. It's functionality was built into some of the newer flashes. Radio triggering is done with pocket wizards (or similar). They can even do TTL now a'days. Usually the slaves are connected to the flashes pc connector.. the shoe connections are kinda flimsy.

The SB 600/800 and later have the su-4 functionality - I havent used them myself.
On strobist it was mentioned of having a long range with the SB-800 for it so probably radio triggering?

None of the Nikon flashes have radios. They are all optical triggering. For example, the SB800 can be used as a commander and SB600 as a slave. In TTL, the SB800 will produce a short series of flashes before the exposure that tells the SB600 what to do. Then, the shutter trips, both flashes fire and the exposure is made correctly. A number of Nikon digital cameras can use the pop up flash as a commander, too. You do not need the SU4 or SU800 unless you do not want a flash on the camera.

Nikon flashes do not have an internal radio receiver. You can get any number of external trigger/receiver kits. The RF 603 II allow for use with TTL and non TTL bodies / flashes (the 603 were not). If you need higher speed sync, the CTR-301P triggers allow up to 1/500s (supposedly).

My bad, I mis-remembered that post from strobist!
You can also use yn622s for HSS - if your camera supports it. And yongnuo also has a controller for that too, apparently.


Btw, latest n greatest digital Nikons have compatible controller sets which can control flash and camera, I think -you might want to check those out too.

Ah sorry for the confusion.. I just assumed the nikons used radio.. seems strange that they would use infra-red.

Optical/infra-red triggers need to be in line of sight to the transmitter to work reliably, radio triggers don't, so you can hide them behind objects and create more subtle lighting effects and they have a much greater range. There are many inexpensive Chinese radio triggers on the market both TTL and none TTL I bought mine from Amazon.

Maybe not infrared. Infrared can be bounced off walls - like with TV remotes.
