Ebay R. H. Phillips & Sons Explorer 8 x 10 inch Large Format Camera

Trader history for stuartwalker121 (0)

arghhh....I had one of these and sold a number of years ago for $1kUSD

For not much more you can get a brand new camera with the same design from Shen-Hao or Chamonix.

But it wouldn't be a Phillips. sounds snobby, but this guy lead the field by a mile. so I guess that confers some value, but not too everybody.

Not snobby at all. This is the real thing, the genuine article...a piece of photographic history.

GLWS.

I guess they are rare in the UK. They were made not far from where I grew up. Dick used to come to local large format events.
When I was in the market for an 8x10, he had long stopped production and recommended the Chamonix. Though, I wound up getting the Shen-Hao instead. I like both front axial and base tilt of the Shen-Hao.

When I first got the Shen-Hao we compared it side-by-side to a unique RH Philips Explorer with natural wood trim. Pretty amazing that someone can come up with a better view camera design like Phillips did, after almost a hundred years of the same view camera designs.
