Any suggestions for destinations for photography. Basically a destination that would allow me to fly to it and enjoy a nice 3-4 day weekend photographing, generally a 3 day holiday weekend possibly with an extra day off. I prefer to fly and dislike long drives (anything over 100 miles). Ideally it should involve:

1. Proximity to a major airport, allowing one to fly in and reach the desitnation quickly.
2. Spectacular and somewhat unique scenery. I genreally prefer landscapes (e.g. Yosemite, Antelope Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, Rocky Mountain National Park etc)
3. Ease of getting there. The overall ease of flying in, renting a car, staying close to my destination and then flying out. The idea being that the whole trip does not turn into a tiring logistical nightmare.

Reasonable options I can think of are Yosemite (using Fresno as the airport) and Rocky Mountain National Park (using Denver). I live in the Northeast US and would ideally prefer destinations that don't turn into a hassle flying to them but am generally flexible.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Sincerely,

Hany.

Any ideas? Sorry for resurrecting my old thread, but I am still looking!

Moab Utah has Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point next to it.

Fly in to Grand Junction Colorado or Salt Lake City, then rent a car and drive [you would need a car in Moab to get to the spectacular scenery. If commercial flights start up again soon then you could fly to Moab, but that has been sputtering on and off for a while.

have you been waiting for a reply for 7 years?

Fly to Manchester UK and visit the Lake District just North of Manachester.

Or

Fly to Glasgow UK and visit the The Trossacks just north of Glasgow

If you want to stay in the UK then
  1. Conwy Wales
  2. Isle of Skye in Scotland and the surrounding lochs

San Francisco... Take highway 1 down to LA or San Diego. If you can get another flight from either LA or SD, that would be the trip of a lifetime. Spend a night in SF, Spend two in Monterey, which is 15 minutes away from Big Sur. Point Lobos is okay, but Garrapata is the real winner. Or, just go to SF and spend all three days there (definitely get a car, public transportation is great!, but a car will get you anywhere so much sooner).

Venice, Rome, Porto, Paris, Barcelona - All good places to visit. If you want entertaining airports to fly in to, Barra (BRR) and Gibraltar (GIB) should be in your top ten.

The Oregon coast. You could fly into San Francisco and drive North, into Seattle and go South or Portland and go East. Drop the car at your final destination. The Oregon coast is about 400 miles long and especially Cannon Beach is great. In Washington state you have the rain forest at Quinault, beaches along the coast and Hurricane Ridge at Port Angeles. As mentioned above Moab and Bryce Canyon in Utah are two of my favorites as well.

You could fly into Palm Springs airport and visit Joshua Tree NP. There are plenty of places to stay just outside the park at reasonable rates. The town of Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and 29 Palms all have facilities.
Not sure how much area you're trying to take in at one bite. If you want to concentrate on one locale it's a good landscape site overall. Plenty of rock formations and high desert terrain as backdrops.

What and take away the mystery?

I think any destination can be interesting. You can often find a good shot where ever you go and perhaps by going to places that many consider boring, you can discover something special.

What about Acadia NP? Ply into Bangor ME drive just about 1 1/4 hrs and you're there.

Kancamagus highway in New Hampshire. Fall colors are peaking (came late this year)

Lake Wobegon which I believe is near Minnenoplace Minnesota, you betcha.
  • Lake Wobegon is the little town that time forgot, and the decades cannot improve.
  • Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average.

visit new zealand. it doesnt matter which airport u fly to. the country is small in comparison to the US. so u get into stunning nature real quick!

Ya! The high school 5-man football team (the Leonards) will be playing St. Olaf H.S this Friday, so you can get some not too bad sports action. There's the World's Largest Pile of Burlap Bags and the Statue of the Unknown Norwegian, which are pretty good. You won't find it on the map because the surveyors screwed up by starting at the eastern and western borders and somehow overlapped. It does show up on Google Earth, though.
