The dad of a colleague of mine wanted to get rid of his darkroom equipment, so I picked it all up yesterday. Among the many things in the lot, I found a bulk film loader + an unopened can of Ilford HP5 (not HP5+) film (17 meters). It looks like the film is from 1992, so probably long expired, but I still want to try it out.

So, my questions:

  1. Can I use the same development times as the ones listed for HP5 in the Massive Dev chart?
  2. I normally use Rodinal, is that a good combination with HP5?
  3. Should I rate it lower, since it is expired?
  4. Can it be pushed, and how much?

I can't help with those questions but just wanted to mention HP5+ was introduced in 1989 so it's at least that old

While the film had the same processing times it's probable that the speed has dropped slightly & the base fog increased, so you'll need to do a test, and probably increase the dev time a little to give decent contrast.
