Question old pentax light meter

1) f8 - follow the needle
2) F5.6 - follow the shape of the (strange) black line

I have this manual, but I could not filter it out from the description, that is why I ask on APUG
Anyone uses this kind of meter ?

I haven't used this meter but after reading the manual and looking at the photo 5.6 it's in the black area. Judging from the photo not sure where you're getting f 8 . as an aside it looks like the photo was taken inside and the meter should be set to L instead of H for a correct reading.

I read it that the needle is pointing at f5.6 - follow the shape of the (strange) black line.

I would recommend that you compare this reading to a known good working meter.

f1.4 - black band. f2 - white band (or silver, hard to tell on my monitor). f2.8 - black, f4 - white, etc.

f1.4, red needle in black band area. f2, red needle in white band area (or silver, hard to tell on my monitor). f2.8 - black, f4 - white, etc.

Those lines only act as intermediaries to bridge the gap between the small needle range and and the wider range to yield readable figures.


for instance in your sample:

f8 a silver line

f5.6 a black line


There are countless meters that employ this kind of read-out.

Never mind. I guess the green mark is battery check and you aren't talking about that.

You were wondering if you should follow the straight line from the needle.

... follow the needle along the black road to f/5.6

I would follow the black line. It looks strange because it needs to be that way to show the correct aperture.

Think of the black/silver as paths to the correct aperture. The needle points to the path, you follow the path.

It isn't just you Henk that was confused. I am/was confused as well. You and I see two things here. A needle that if you extend its direction to the f numbers above, points to f8 and a black line in which the needle rests which goes to f5.6. The line is wavy(?)and our confusion starts). Others' brains are configured differently and their brains may not even try to extend the needle direction so do not see the apparent contradiction that we see.

Here's a story of how we are the exception, see things others don't but are not necessarily simply slow witted.

In the army an instructor had problems with one recruit who seemed slow to understand how a hand-grenade worked. He worried about the recruit's apparent lack of intelligence and kept on explaining that if you dropped the grenade after the pin had been removed there was no means of stopping it from exploding and should this happen at throwing practice you had to shout "Grenade" to warn the others and jump into the ditch for protection

To make sure that everyone reacted quickly to such an accident which had not happened in many years, he always dropped a grenade on the last practice session. In case not everyone reacted quickly enough it was always a dummy grenade but of course the recruits didn't know this.

When he dropped it all the recruits, except the one he was worried about, immediately jumped into the ditch without waiting for the instructor to shout" Grenade" The "slow witted" recruit just stood there and looked at the instructor. The instructor asked him why he hadn't jumped like the rest.

The apparently "slow witted" recruit simply said: If that's a real grenade then why haven't you jumped as well"

H3V, isn't it? I bought one together with a black SPF, never tried it, later I put a battery inside and it appears it works well...still I have to test the camera with film.
