question about quantity of developer to use

I've been processing myself for a few months now and am reading The Film Developing Cookbook by Anchell and Troop and came across a section I was wondering about.

They say for developers such as D-76, to use 250ml undiluted per roll of 36 and for dilute developers, such as HC-110 (B) to use 500ml per roll of 36. Following this out, to use D-76 1+1, I'd need to develop a single roll in a two-reel tank (250ml developer + 250ml water) or to develop in HC-110 (H, 1+63), I'd have to develop a single roll in a four-reel tank.

This is the first I've encountered of this anywhere that I've searched: usually, I've just used a single-reel tank for one roll and a two-reel tank for two, mixing the amount I need to fill the tank. Though Michael Covington's HC-110 page (http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/hc110/) does recommend using at least 6ml of HC-110 syrup per roll of 36 which works out to around 500ml of working solution at dilution H.

Do people generally do this, i.e. use the higher amount of developer recommended by Anchell and Troop?

I don't use D76 but I one shot HC110 at Dil B (1:31) for a dual reel tank (2-36 exp. 135-roll film rolls). I have used four rolls per one mixture (500mL) with good results.

HC110 at Dil B is good for the equivalent of 10 8x10 sheets of film per gallon (3.8L). That's 100 square inches per pint (500mL). A 36 exp roll of 135 is about 55 square inches. That would indicate that you could safely soup two rolls per 500mL mix.

D76 straight will do 10 rolls of 36 exp 135 roll film per gallon. That is 1.25 rolls per 500mL straight solution. You should be able to get by with two rolls. The life for D76 1:1 is eight rolls. One per 500mL mixture.
